The Test Chapter 9

Woody turns to Kalli, “We need to field test our Mechs. Can we use the arena?” “Yes … I’ll order the field test. All vid and visual ports will be shut down, “ Kalli replies. The boys enter their Mechs for the first time since the battle at the school. “Daddy’s home!” Woodman says to Road Runner as he powers her up. Woodman goes through each system, “All green here Coyote,” Woodman says over the com. “Ohhhh Yeaaahhh... Forgot about that call sign,” Woody laughs. “I’m all green too Road Runner. Let’s move out.” Woody says. The boys open the bay doors and move out on to the transport. Once the Mechs are secured they move to the arena via a system of tunnels. “WOW!!! This is cool,” Woodman says. “Yeah, very impressive,” Woody says. As the floor doors open, the Mechs begin their ascent to the arena. Moments later, a loud CLANG, then a CLICK. As the Mechs are released, Woodman is first to begin moving around. “I forgot how fluid she moves around. My best advice is don’t even think you’re in a Mech … Jut pretend you’re walking around.” Woodman says.

“Holy CRAP!!! This thing moves FAST!” Woody yells. After an hour or so of maneuvering around each on their own, they start putting movement patterns together and begin moving around together as a team. All of a sudden, they hear a loud BANG, then a CLICK. “Dude … Someone else is in here,” Woodman mutters. “Well, let’s see who it is,” Woody says. Just then, their training systems come on and activate. “Let’s use this chance to practice going up again unknown targets,” Woody says. “I’ll take point,” Woodman says. “K … let’s move.” Woody responds. He says, “Don’t use sensors. They’ll give our position away.” “Roger that,” Woodman replies. “Road Runner, take the high ground but keep cover.” “Roger Coyote.” As Woody takes position, he sees some branches move at the edge of the woods. “Road Runner … Be prepared to move fast and fire on my target. Edge of the woods, sector 3C. Lock targets NOW, and fire Big Bertha.” Woodman jumps just as a set of rockets land where he once was. Woody fires Shrieking Pain at a second target emerging from a large rock. “It’s the girls Coyote!” “Roger that.” But just then, Woody’s cockpit shakes hard. His left arm is gone. As Woody runs for cover, he sees what looked to be a Holmes out of his left eye. “Road Runner … there’s a third Mech … A Holmes. I lost my left arm.” “Holy CRAP!!! Get to a safe location and turn on sensors NOW Coyote!”

“Roger that Road Runner.” As their sensors come on, there are three targets left. One destroyed. As Woody looks at his panel, One Holmes: destroyed. One Warhorse: damaged. One Warhorse: no damage. One Holmes: no damage. “Road Runner! … Shut sensors and targeting systems down. Let’s go dark.” “Roger Coyote. Use Delta Six … drop back and fly.” “Roger Road Runner.” Both boys’ Mechs move out to a full on sprint. All of a sudden, shells and laser beams start flying everywhere. “They’re in pursuit Coyote.” “Roger.” As the boys move around a large formation of rocks, Road Runner swivels around and cups his hands together. Coyote places a foot into Road Runners hands as Road Runner launches Coyote. Coyote in turn pushes off at the same time, sending him up and over the formation and on to the top. At the same moment, Road Runner continues to run full out. Just as he gets behind some cover, two Mechs comes charging around the corner, guns blazing. Road Runner returns fire. The two Mechs quickly stop and take cover behind the formation. Coyote quickly moves in from above on the rock formation. He simultaneously fires at both Mechs as he jumps down and hugs the dirt. Just as he hits the dirt, a Holmes fires a volley of projectiles but misses, and hits the two Warhorses. Just then, two lasers go streaking over Coyote as he sees Road Runner leaping over him and firing at the Holmes.

Coyote quickly gets up and joins in the attack. The Holmes is caught out in the open and the two faster Hoplites move quickly around the Holmes at close range and take it apart. A loud horn sounds and all weapon systems are shut down. All Mechs are able to move and coms are open once again. A gruff voice says, “Nice job guys – I’m impressed.” says Commander Blade as he leaves the field. “Wow guys! That was AWESOME!!! You have to teach us some moves!” Kalli yells as they follow the Commander. The boys look at each other and give a high five. “Let’s go clean up the Mechs and give them a once over. They worked hard today,” Coyote says to Road Runner. Once the boys are back in their hanger, and they’re finished with their last minute maintenance and adjustments, Woody says, “Man, I’m beat. We need to get some sleep.” Woodman agrees and they pack it up for the night.
