Oggun Mecha Review By Brian D. Wise#1726

The Oggun is in my opinion one of the best early crystal mechs to own. there are few mechs that last you long into your career. Looking at this mech at three points in its useful lifecycle, When you can acquire it, level 50 (when every mech has achieved its best power up usually), and finally for this mech, lvl 60, when its maxed out in power.

At level 24 this becomes one of the best crystal mechs you can dump your resources into and get every bit of power out of it. because it is exactly 50 tons it can use gear for more powerful mechs that you will want to start collecting as well as several lower level pieces of gear, in particular the wankle rotary and the hot rod motor(highly sought after for lower ton mechs for its speed and healing factor). at level 24 a fully leveled oggun 1 cockpit, 2 chassis, 1 engine and 1 shield. which allows for equipping your mech for several different layouts. Its big power is in its 2x damage boost that helps give you the punch you need to take out some of your biggest threats.

At level 50, the Oggun has done its duty and has brought you to the top of the pile for all beginner pilots. At this point you will regularly be fighting 75 ton or better mechs and your gear will need to migrate to your better mechs. The oggun is now becoming a mech that you throw into fill in slots. At level 50 most mechs receive its best power up for getting upgraded all the way up, and for the oggun that is a huge boost to 2x damage, enough to allow it a 60% chance to deal out 2x damage. with everything going for it, it now has a lackluster equipment layout. It now has 2 cockpits, 3 chassis, 1 engine(where it really has a weakness), and 2 shields. Most mechs your now able to purchase will have 3 or more of each of these at the same level. The only good news is the fact that it will be the only mech that can still benefit from equipment you purchased or earned long ago that cannot be equipped to your more powerful mechs, this gives a last bit of life to your oggun until you are able to completely phase it out with larger mechs in all of your slots.

Finally we come to level 60, sadly these last 10 levels have come to show that this mechs usefulness is in specialty battles where you can take advantage of pulling from both equipment pools for lower mechs and higher mechs, such as KOTM's and 50ton specialist in Clan Wars. At this point, its time to look into retiring this mech to the warehouse and dust it off when those specialty fights will allow it to shine once again.

Here is to hoping that one day my favorite mech gets an update to allow me to pull it out more often. (side note, I do still currently use two copies of this mech, mainly because a nioded oggun still beats most 75 -80 ton mechs that are equipped completely in crystal gear. however if I ever get enough equipment to retire these final two then I will have done so with the knowledge that these fine mechs have done me proud.)

FourBanger Equipment Review by David McCallum #701548

So the wife has just completed her first ever raid.

Of course, if there is anything that looks like a shop window display, you can be sure she’s going to be coming out of it with more shopping bags than can be carried by such legendary cargo haulers as, say, soldier ants or Small Peruvian Grandmothers.

And since our son (her usual tactical advisor) was not present, I had to answer the string of resultant questions. Yes, you can think of adding equipment as being just like “accessorising”. No, it’s not usually the best thing to add equipment purely on the grounds of colour co-ordination. No, Imechs only come in white… yes, just like Japanese cars.

I did however get a chance to look through her swag, and there was a fair bit of it that I would normally gloss over in my own formations, but down at the late teens/early twenties in level, they could well be far more pertinent.

The FourBanger was what caught my eye, mainly because it’s a name that’s just begging to have double-entendres associated with it.

What you actually get is a engine built to fit all bar the heaviest of medium weight mechs, costing 35 crystal, 400 Ferrite and 1169 Bioptics. Speed rating of only 17 though, which is 3 lower than the cheaper Wankel Rotary (another name that’s howling for some added smuttiness, but I digress). All you get for the decrease in speed, which let’s face it is pretty vital at low levels when everyone is weak enough that one shot can kill, is a point of slow.

So the question is, why would you?

And in searching for an answer, I was glancing around at the wife’s mechs. Imechs and Nifthels, both with intrinsic slow at 4 and 3 respectively. The only other medium mechs with this ability can’t even be bought for niodes, let alone crystal, as the Nephilax and Vizi are both mechs that can only be won as prizes.

Apart from crit kill, slow is the only damage type that can’t be thrown off or repaired. The medium weight bracket is strewn with mechs that have such a high throw weight of firepower that crystal mechs can’t keep up with them… unless, perhaps, you hobble them with slow, grinding them down with stacked slow shots.

The Nifthel has engine slots in spades for its size, and it uses those lovely, slowing, freezing ice weapons.

I’m trying to convince the wife that ice white is the fashionable colour this season.

Pilot Interview with William Pierce #802131

GG: I’ve managed to make finally track down one of the men of the moment as our clans finish off the post war raids. This time around I’m talking to William Pierce, normally from Heroes II but this time around fought in Heroes Support.

First off, congratulations on your gold medal, in fact that makes it back to back golds for you. Were you aware that you are now only the fourth still active member of the Heroes to have won back to back?

WP: Was not aware of that. For the second win I was carried though.

GG: You were asked to step up to Support to provide holiday cover for one of the higher level players who had to sit out. What was the transition like? Any difference moving up a few divisions?

WP: Was a huge difference. Went from being one of the stronger peeps to being way over matched. Had to really pretest hits before the wars started to see if I could hit the other players or not. Liked that I was able to score some higher level noide mechs though so was good all around.

GG: Were you playing as a specialist this time around?

WP: 10 ton spec, had more defensive wins then losses too.

GG: Oooh, love a Red Ant! They just never grow old.

Looking forward to moving back down to your regular slot, or would you prefer to stay in the higher level group?

WP: Either would be OK with me . Just having fun playing this game.

GG: Now one of the things we like to do here at Galaxy Gathering is focus on advice for new pilots. As a medium term goal for young pilots as they move towards your level, which mechs should they look at bulking up on and why?

WP: If in a clan that plans on wars I would pick a spec (or 2) and build them up. For any 1 mech, Ammonites are nice. My best thing that I have found was do not sell any mechs and buy 2 of the crystal ones when they become available. Pray that you win some niode mechs along the way. I like the Ammonite for all the shielding they get. Also always buy new faster crystal weapons as they open up

GG: Thats a fair swag of sound advice right there. But do you have any personal favourites in your own line up?

WP: I took advantage of the rent sales and bought a Skriag . Its crit seems to fire more than normal and my Megazome is usually the last to die in his line so would say they are nice (but I have still have four Ammonites).

GG: Change of pace with some random questions, pilots need to think on their feet sometimes. So hypothetical tactical appraisal, which would win a fight between a badger and a baboon?

WP: Fighting the badger, baboons run if threatened.
.

GG: And what is your stance in the debate on the strategic use of raccoons?

WP: worked twice for me then failed on third so thought I would try a pie-rat pic instead. Its not working on mechs but good on equipment

GG: Do you have a favourite snack food that you take in the cockpit while you are fighting?

WP: {laughs} No, I eat what ever is at hand; P-B-J sandwiches, chips, fruit through to whatever was for dinner.

GG: We should probably leave the randomness there for the time being. I guess since we are here we should talk about the current rumours that the next big event is going to be a Faction War. Have you fought in one before?

WP: No I do not believe so, Heroes is the second clan I have been in ( the other was a anti James Bond group that had no real leadership).

GG: Its pretty much like a regular clan war, but you join clans together to make sides of around 50 players...

WP:Oh yes, have been in one before. It was fun. I was in middle of the group but only won 1 fight.

GG: Are you a fan of the bigger, longer events like Faction wars or Mechalympix, or do you prefer just a regular clan war?

WP: I liked the Faction War but missed the Mechalympix.

GG: Are there any suggestions you could give to the devs in regard tweaking the format of bigger events to make it better?

WP: If there is a way to set niode heavy mech against other niode heavies and crystal against crystal (wish full think I believe)but they get their money from the niode payers.

GG: We should probably look at wrapping up now, so I’ll hit you with one final question. Did the bandit masked furry raccoon god smile on your raid tally?

WP: Over all I would have to say it did. Also it drove my friends nuts because I would change my status to releasing the raid raccoon

GG: Well I’d best let you go and play with your new toys then! Thanks for taking the time to talk to us.

Hello one and all here's what is new in the Galaxy today. CW has wrapped up, congratulations to the teams who brought home the gold, scored a silver, or managed a bronze. Best of luck to those who got beat out better luck next time. Clan Raids are up and it looks like A.M. is at it again, the rewards look promising this time out so best of luck to all involved in crushing the A.I. As well as best wishes on the prizes.

For us here at G.G. as you may have noticed we have been running a lot of comics lately. What do you good folks think of them? We are considering taking a couple days a week to devote just to these comics. That way we can break it up a bit more evenly throughout the site and have more room for written reviews, fantasy mecha etc. We are still looking for scripts for comics to be submitted in to Artemis Molly. Just send us your script with your user ID# and we pass it along to Molly who pays you when said script becomes a tried and true comic. So that's what is new and exciting with us here at Galaxy Gathering, hope all is well with our readers, and happy hunting one and all.

Anonymous Comm's Transmission

Person A- When I switched to dress in my 140T formation, I checked before I did my hit and glad I did. What I had saved was not there, crap from a previous CWs was. I went back to my main and waited until after I won another hit, went to my main set up and threw away every mecha until the 2 I wanted for my 140T was there and did my battle, then went back to the base and did 'save current' over my 140T crap set up. After another win I went back and double checked my 140T and it was BACK TO CRAP even after re saving.

Brainchef better fix this or it's not worth being here, too much aggravation. Be careful because what you think you are bringing to battle may not be what shows up. When you change you should check before you hit. Don't hit if it is wrong, put on your CW formation instead and skip that specialty.

PersonB- On my lower accounts I kept finding additional mechs on the 140, 220, 400 etc when I did the pre-war rebuilds. All were located in the position that I had saved them on rainbows.

Joel Parras- I'm recommending NO specialist for the next CW.....these formation save errors on the server are an obsolete disgrace! I myself had more than 5 formations off my accounts missing weapons & with prior/old/overwritten (the last time i checked!) formations.

I'm convinced that chef has done some major server wide backup/restore or updating as usual without informing anyone so he can shrug it off with the usual lack of accountability........the players forum is rife with "hanger issues" with saved formations & everything from mechs to weapons are going wandering about on there own.........& for the record...."AM" or artificial mind as it prefers to be called.......is NOT the cause

Donald Alligood#201365 Interviews Michael Brown#23931

Welcome fans of mayhem and carnage this is Donald Alligood bringing you Michael Brown, one of the warriors of the fan favorite's  Zeon.  Welcome Michael, Can I get your player ID please?

23931

Congratulations on your huge round 1 win versus overlords elite.  336-7 is pretty dominant.  You definitely put a lot of time and strategy into this game.  Do you see the rest of the war being similar or do you think theres a sleeper that can give you a challenge?

Well we never know what a clan might bring to the battlefield, but we are hopeful there is more like this to come. Doesn't everyone

It is nice to have your cakewalks, but sometimes its fun to be pushed a bit as well.  Zeon is getting close to entering division 2. Think less than 1 level separated Zeon and misfit toys from the last seed in 2 and the first seed in 3.  Is Zeon excited about possibly being a division 2 clan soon and the new challenges that would bring with it?

Yes we were preparing for a Div 2 war and surprised we landed in Div 3. One must believe that its never fun without a challenge to push you to new limits and become a better clan with each victory or defeat. We would love the challenge it would bring to move on up, but that time will come soon enough and we are ready.

Gotta love that confidence and excitement.  For the second war in a row, the prizes are giving out a mech to any clan that wins a fight.  Would you care to share your thoughts on that?

It never hurts to reward clans and thier players for putting out the effort to join these events and the mechs help make these events more exciting and challenging.

I agree. I think it will keep the divisions and the rivalries within them more heated and the players in them more passionate and involved in the game.  Were there any major suprises in round 1 or did most of the fights go how you thought they would and are there any matchups that your looking forward to?

Well no surprises for me and I believe the other matchups will be routine battles but i do like the rainbows they have proven to be unpredictable so it will be the ones i pay close attention to

I thank you for your time Michael.  Best of luck to you and the rest of Zeon.

Thanks to you and we will see everyone on the next battlefield.

An Editors Conversation By Pat Willis#224534

Not that long ago the normal rule of the Beat down was disabled for 30 minutes. The rule that states you can't hit your opponent more than two times in 24 hours was lifted, and people were going nuts attacking each other for that half hour. At the Galaxy Gathering offices we received a special visitor from the Craftsmen Guild. Artemis Molly stopped in get the low down from us for a change on our views of this temporary suspension of rules. The conversation was short but to the point and is in its entirety here.

Artemis Molly - Dropping the beat down rule was quite unusual. we're in talks about if it's a good idea to make that a periodic event or not. What do yo guys think about that? Did you like having that time to smash like crazy?

David McCallum  - Missed the time period, was at work. So with due respect, unless it was used in a day long period, you will get complaints from those not in US time zones. And I honestly can't see any value on being on the receiving end of somebody's desire to give a day long beating. Sorry, I really don't understand what could be gained from an event incorporating this... apologies if this all sounds very negative, but I must be entirely missing the point.

Patrick Willis - Was occupied when it hit. Personally I am so so on it. On one hand it allows farming and what not to be done faster, on the other it allows for score and leader board manipulation by users of alts inflating numbers or kills.

Ron Frye- I couldn't give a rats ass about the leader boards as they really are only a bragging right platform so that part I have no real opinion on....and as for the farming, I could do better by hitting up the circuit fights and buying and selling fury lasers so once again I really have no opinion on it one way or the other.....What I did find disturbing was the unannounced nature of a massive suspension of game rules and a modification of the games programming and mechanics....on a technical level, since this was put together and implemented in such a short period of time, and for only a temporary event, it could have had adverse effects in the form of game glitches for weeks to come..... but it didn't..... thank God..... lol.....and on a player viewpoint level, it promoted a LOT of unnecessary bickering and drama which I absolutely DETEST....so I think some additional thought should have gone into the venture.....I think that the labor involved in the event could have been better used for a more profitable and engaging project, overall.....once again however, these are all just personal opinions and impressions.....other players may have drastically different experiences involving this special event.

So what did you ladies and gents think of the idea? Sound off in the comments section make sure to leave your player ID# and we can toss you a couple niodes for your trouble.

Nanobot Repair Review by David McCallum #701548

I have had recent occasion to mentor a low level pilot and get him ready for his very first clan war. It has given me a new appreciation of some of the lower level equipment, and it’s always nice to see the reaction to old faithful equipment when seen through fresh eyes.

Let me re-introduce you to the Nanobot Repair system. In my opinion, this is the make or break system for so many players; it separates the haves from the have nots when you first start off.

You either have auto-repair or you don’t. Without it, your precious fragile little low level mechs take a hit, and you pray that they either don’t get hit again, or its low enough powered that it won’t kill you. Then the second hit comes in and you are still alive, and you pray that you don’t get hit anymore, because your hit points are in the red and you are going to die.

And while you pray, you watch the enemy mechs take hits from you and they stagger, but their hit points start climbing back up. And you can’t beat them.

That’s the point where you either give up the game, or you spend 27 Niodes, 250 Bioptics and 285 Ferrite and get in the game properly. 4 points of auto repair and a bonus bit of shield.

Oh yes, the old timers will say, but what about the kickback? Kickback is bad, you don’t want kickback. Deal with it sweety, you have a bigger chance of blowing up from getting hit with a Galaxy Eye than you do from your own auto repair system! And without it, you certainly aren’t going to survive the other hits that don’t crit you. This will at least give you the fighting chance to just take one more hit than your enemy, fire off just one more shot before you blow up.

My young ward complained that he couldn’t beat the enemy that could repair themselves, couldn’t hit them hard enough or take them out quickly enough. Oh how the youngsters just miss the blindingly obvious answer.

Just go out and buy some yourself, eh?

So How Random Is The RNG Really? By Pat Willis#224534

The RNG, or random number generator for our game seems to love the R&D clan family lately. So much so that the past few days lotto wins look like this...

2015-09-18: Debbie Cole 99th Chessman R&D Core[RND]
2015-09-17: doug57e 111th Baconators [RND]
2015-09-17: Joe Smith 82nd Omicron Guard [RND]
2015-09-16: Scout Fortune 82nd Omicron Guard [RND]

This of course has led to yet more cries of the game is rigged from many on the game boards. Now to be clear no one is leveling any accusations against the R&D family of clans. It has lead however to much speculation that the RNG for the game is off, set to play favorites, or just plain broke as hell altogether. The cries of "Foul" are heard all across the galaxy. To be honest I can't really say I don't see why.

There have been past instances of Clan families winning lotto multiple times in a row and foul was called then as well. However at least it seemed to be improving, well until this happened. Let's face it no one is really happy for you when your luck is better than theirs, however how many instances of multiple wins, or same clan wins will it take before all this is looked at, and reevaluated? A one off happens sure, coincidence we say and brush it off. But of late there have been many multiple winners, and it is starting to be noticed.

So lets just admit the RNG is busted otherwise how can you have so many that have for so long been playing this lotto system and never win anything, yet on the flip side have so many that score multiple wins, multiple times. Lets face it as long as your specific clan wins you get niodes as well so you can bet no one is complaining from the winning clans, the rest of the game however is a whole nother matter.

VASMIR Core Engine Review by David McCallum #701548

Well, we've finally started getting the long awaited range of equipment applicable to the big 95 and 100 ton mechs, and this is the first crystal variant that gives something other than pure speed.

Its a little bit pricier than the straight flat out speed generating Kinetic Converter with a book price of 60 Crystal, 1775 Ferrite and 1352 Bioptics, but you do get a nice wee twist for the added outlay.

And twist is exactly what I mean when I say it. Trying to heft a tenth of a kiloton of metal off its starting blocks is no mean feat, and for that you need not raw horsepower, but lots and lots of torque. As a result, a lot of pilots are generally disappointed that these behemoths have a very low top speed, but all of that power (and these are BIIIG engines) has to go into torques just to overcome all that inertia.

And the VASMIR delivers that, laying down more torque than your granny's wound up knicker elastic. So much in fact, that it introduces a wobble to the chassis that translates into an increase in dodge which is always a welcome bonus.

The fact that it runs hotter than the Kinetic converter is both a blessing and a curse... they've managed to bleed of some of that excess heat off to pre-warm the volatile mix used for flame weapons for some extra 'whumph', but it does give out a higher heat signature that those pesky seeking missiles can home in on.

All in all though, the pluses and minuses balance out making this a nice engine for a little variety to your builds.

Ddraig Concept Mecha by Spike Shepard Player ID #846030

Y Ddraig Goch

Y Ddraig Goch (The Welsh Dragon) was an experimental mech in it's early design stages when it was first brought into battle by a young Shepard. It proved it's worth in battle but was badly damaged.

Sadly young Shepard was unable to afford repairs or further research and development so 'Ddraig' was left to rust, hidden away on a pirate moon, with it's true potential unrealised.

Several years later Shepard joined clan Heroes when he came to their aid in battle. It was this new found friendship that re-sparked the research into Ddriag when Davey Mac came across the design plans which were stored in a conduit while helping Shepard to upgrade his Sever.

One quick run to one of the pirate moons later and the damaged prototype of Ddraig was once again in Shepard's hands. Though Ddraig had sustained some damage it was not as bad as Shepard first thought. A few weeks later with the help of Eric Evans, Ddraig was once again taking shape. This time though the expertise and finances of Clan Heroes had made serious inroads into improving the design and firepower of Ddraig.

Ddraig was now faster and more agile than before, but this had come at a slight cost to armour, compared with other 95 ton mecha. On the other hand though Ddraig has been coated in an experimental solution which gives it a good resistance to fire damage.

If you observe Shepard in his Ddraig on the field of battle then the best advice is to move out of the way. Smaller mecha caught in it's path have been left in pieces from trample damage alone while other mecha pilots foolhardy enough to take on Shepard are often left as burning piles of molten metal. Ton for ton the Ddraig is one mech every clan pilot wants in their frontline.

Top Ten Complaints Of Mecha Galaxy By Pat Willis#224534

1. Seen every Clan War - The divisions are wrong!
2. The lotto is fixed.
3. The limits on weapons are too small numbers wise.
4. Lag....
5. Why is there now limits on equipment?
6. Why is it the higher you go tonnage wise the more built in failures are on your equipment?
7. Just pick an end time for KOTM and stick with it. This random end time crap makes me miss my favorite prime time T.V. shows, and I get real bored refreshing the screen for almost an hour each time. People have lives you know!
8. Why is division one so favored?
9. Why is it no matter your precision or dodge rating you WILL miss that crit hit that you need in a raid and the opponent WILL hit you?
10. Is there some kind of treatment center I can go to for this addiction?

King Of The Robot Ring Fighting By Brian D. Wise #17026

(Broadcast transmission begins)

…. (Roar of a Crowd)….
(Announcer Speaks) Since the dawn of man, man has fought with one another. As time has changed the weapons man used to fight one another with have evolved. Today they have evolved into some of the ultimate fighting machines on any planet. And now from Kryton 4, we bring you some of the greatest fighting you will ever see. Welcome to King of the Robot Ring Fighting. (KRRF Appears on the screen).

(Crowd roars as the screen shows a large arena filled with people, it pans to in the Arena where a silver and red Oggun stands holding a massive sledgehammer.) (The Oggun starts pumping his arms and waving the hammer over his head and the crowd roars).

(Announcer) I’m Vincent St. Paul and beside me I have Jerry Michaels. And we have for you three epic battles to watch tonight. In the ring, right now we have Chris “Ox” Malcolm and his mech Hammertime. He comes from Vega 23 and is using a new Megaton War Hammer.

(Jerry)He seems to be a fan favorite and today look to be a good fight with his opponent. And here he comes now…

(From the Arena entrance walks out an orange and white Namtar with its arms replaced with usable hands and wielding a 17 foot long Katana-styled sword)

(Vincent) It’s Yoshiko “The Samurai” Taiko, from Alpha Centauri Prime, and her mech Mega Shogun. She is wielding her trusty sword “Slasher”.

(The Namtar walks down from the arena entrance to the arena, the crowd boos and hisses)
(Jerry) Since Kryton 4 used to be a colony of the Shogunate, any pilot who were a part of that conflict are of course going to be hated by this crowd, so Yoshiko has a hard road to hoe to gain any traction today. But the crowd is not her opponent today, Hammertime is.

(Vincent) That’s right. And we should see a great fight here tonight.

(The modified Namtar squares off with the Oggun and bows to Hammertime before taking a swordswoman’s stance. The Oggun stops’ pumping the crowd up and takes his corner and squares up and two hands the massive hammer in front of him.)

(A giant horn sounds near the arena and the fighters start moving towards one another.)

(The Namtar slowly moves around the ring as the Oggun comes in with a big swing at the Namtar’s body. The Namtar blocks with the sword and is pushed back two steps. As the Namtar recovers the Oggun charges in and uses its shoulder to slam into the Namtar’s body.)

(Vincent) Ouch, Hammertime uses his patent shoulder slam to help close the distance and knock Mega Shogun towards the corner.

(Jerry) Hammertime is an aggressive Mech and Chris is an aggressive pilot, He knows that getting in that first hit is important in the outcome of any fight.

(The Namtar falls back towards the corner before stabilizing and regaining her stance, the oggun quickly tries to take advantage and comes in again with an overhead swing with the hammer. The Namtar dodges this blow and slashes into the Ogguns mid section. The sword connecting, sending a shower of sparks everywhere, the crowd roars with excitement, as the Megaton Warhammer slams into the ground and caves in the ground around where it hit.)

(Jerry) Mega Shogun is not out of this fight yet, and connects solidly with Hammertime. Yoshiko is a skilled fighter and will take advantage of that with every swing of her sword.

(Vincent) You’re correct, but Hammertime is used to taking hits. But is even better at giving them as we can see from the crater it left in the ground where his Megaton War Hammer.

(The Oggun recovers from the hit and quickly faces the Namtar who swings the sword deftly at the Oggun. The Oggun blocks the sword blow with the hilt of his hammer. The Namtar quickly swings again and again at the Oggun who barely manages to block each blow with the hammer handle.)

(Jerry) Mega Shogun is really using her speed to take advantage of Hammertime, she knows that one or two hits could win this fight with Slasher’s special ability.

(Vincent) Slasher is well known for its winning fights in just a single hit, but so is that Megaton War Hammer, one hit from that hammer will crush in pilots dream of winning.

(As the Oggun is now backed into the Namtar’s corner, the Namtar presses the advantage and continues to swing at the oggun. The Oggun drops his guard on his left side and lets go of the Hammer in his left hand, the Namtar takes its shot at the Oggun, steps in and slashes down into the Ogguns left side. The Oggun quickly brings up his left arm and absorbs the blow as best as it can and falls away as it is severed from the mech. While the Namtar is brought in close with its attack the Oggun strikes and swings in with his Megaton War hammer. The Megaton War Hammer connects with the left side of the cockpit and explodes, forcing the Namtar to fall back and try to recover. Spider webs of damage can be seen all over the Namtar’s cockpit and its left side is heavily crumpled in. The Crowd is on its feet in cheer for the massive explosion.)

(Vincent) Woah, and we see now just how powerful that Hammer can be. The Megaton War Hammer is no slouch when it comes to dealing damage with an explosive charge in the hammers head. Mega Shogun will be in the repair bay for a week recovering from that hit.

(Jerry) You said it Vincent, that hammer has laid the smack down right on the face of Mega Shogun, but at the cost of Hammertime’s left arm. Hammertime cannot afford to keep taking hits like that.

(Vincent) That’s right, without Hammertime’s left arm he will lose some of the effectiveness of the Megaton War Hammer. This is anyone’s game here now. Mega Shogun is heavily damaged but has full use of her sword, while Hammertime gave up its own left arm to connect with Mega Shogun. We will just have to see if that hit was worth it.

(The Oggun slowly brings up the hammer and swings it around above his head, the crowd roars and chants, “HAMMER TIME! HAMMER TIME!” The Oggun stomps across the ring. The Namtar slowly recovers and make her way back to the corner. As the Namtar finally gets back into a fighting stance and then proceeds to move in towards the Oggun who isn’t paying attention. The Namtar quickly swings in and strikes the back of the Oggun. The Slice send sparks everywhere as the Oggun Falls to one knee and the hammer slams into the ground with a massive THUMP!)

(Jerry) Chris and Hammertime should have not been playing to the crowd there, he let his advantage go and its now cost him. This may be the end of Hammertime.

(Vincent) Don’t count Hammertime out just yet, this fight isn’t over until one mech is permanently down, and we both know it.

(The Namtar steps back and prepare to go finish off the Oggun as it slowly circles around the Oggun to face it from the front and deliver the final blow. The Oggun uses it massive Megaton War Hammer to push itself back to its feet and stands up, the war hammer’s head on the ground, while the handle is barely in the Oggun’s hand.)

(Jerry) Here it comes, Mega Shogun is about to finish this with one more blow. There is no way that Hammertime can recover from that last hit.

(The Namtar brings up Slasher to its right side, raising the sword high above its cockpit. The Oggun quickly grabs tightly onto the handle of the massive Hammer and brings the Hammer up and smashes it into the underside of the Namtar’s cockpit before a second massive explosion rocks the Namtar. The Sword in the Namtar’s hand falls away, as the mech is lifted up by the force of the explosion. It flies up 8 feet before slowly falling backwards onto the ring floor. The Namtar’s cockpit is completely dark as its power fails. The crowd cheers with excitement and rants about the shogunate.)

(Jerry) Unbelievable, did you see that, from out of nowhere Hammertime recovers and finishes off Mega Shogun with a massive critical to the cockpit. Yoshiko is out.

(Vincent) This looks to be the end of the fight, with Mega Shogun’s power out it can no longer fight. This leaves us with Chris Malcolm and Hammertime, our winner of the first round of today’s fight. We will have to wait a few for the cleaners to pick up what’s left of Mega Shogun and Hammertime before we can continue to our next match. So Jerry, your thoughts on the battle we just witnessed.

(Jerry) Hammertime was almost downed by Mega Shogun’s last attack when he decided to play up to the crowd. That nearly cost him the match, but he stayed in there and with one final swing he was able to pull of that final blow he needed to take out Yoshiko and Mega Shogun this round.

(Vincent) Excellent and we will now take a short break for a word from our sponsors.

…(Broadcast transmission breaks to a commercial about Hatorade Light)…

Clan War A Song By Stuart Myshrall #422352

CLAN: Highlanders (Highland Regiments)

Clan War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely good loot
Uh-huh
Clan War, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely good loot
Say it again, y'all
Clan War, huh, good God
What is it good for
Absolutely good loot
Listen to me
Oh, Clan War, I enjoy
Because it means destruction
Of innocent lives
Clan War means tears
To thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives
I said, Clan War, huh
Good God, y'all
What is it good for
Absolutely good loot
Say it again
Clan War, whoa, Lord
What is it good for
Absolutely good loot
Listen to me
Clan War, it ain't nothing but fun
And a heart breaker
Clan War, friend only to the undertaker
Ooh, Clan War
It's an enemy to all mankind
The point of Clan War blows my mind
Clan War has caused unrest
Within the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die
Aah, Clan War-huh
Good God…

Galaxy Gossip by David McCallum #701548

Radium Engine Review by David McCallum #701548

The first comment I heard when these were released was “Zadok’s just got a whole lot tougher…”

It’s a very accurate summation, and on a whole lot of levels it sums up the fact that this is a very nice and useful bit of gear.

With a list price of 256 ferrite, 205 Bioptics and 14 Niodes you get speed of 20 and a straight armour pack of 10. The really impressive thing that stands out is that for the higher end of its usage range, you loose none of the speed of the standard Wankel engine and only the ultra light block engines go faster.

The fact that this armour boost is coming in at levels where armour slots are at a premium on mechs and you are only enhancing them rather than swapping out means that you are getting almost the same armour value as a Beta grade shield with none of the vulnerabilities, and the cost is comparable.

It may not be much, but finally the Holmes class gets some shielding, the Orcus gets really bullet proof and the Axebot gets the most benefit of all in terms of protection from this system although it has to relinquish some speed to do it.

So for an up and coming pilot where the weapons are not as powerful as they are at high level, this addition is going to keep you in the battle for just a few more shots to get your win.

And the beauty is that for high level players who only bring the little guys out in specialist wars, the price is such that its almost loose change; If you don’t have enough niodes for a system for the big boys, this is a worthwhile investment to use up the leftovers.

Rolling The Dice By Brian D. Wise#17026

Every pilot worth his salt would kill for a top of the line mech. Every pilot has their preference, and they all are willing to gamble for that once chance of getting that mech that will change their fate. Drake Morningstar is no exception; he is one of the pilots hired by Commandant Wise to pilot several of his mechs for purposes of exploration and wars. Commandant Wise, one of RND’s up and coming commanders, is looking to expand his fleet on the cheap and knows when a mech is worth its niodes or if it’s time to send it on towards the great scrap heap in the stars. Last week, Commandant Wise took every last niode he had to the gambling hall to bet on winning some new weapons and gear to help outfit his forces. But what caught his eye was the shiny new Torrent sitting in the Mystery Vortex. The Commandant had heard from all of his troops how they all wanted to pilot one of these fine mechs in battle after several skirmishes where this beast of a mech had torn into them and put them on notice that they were not the baddest mechs in the land.

Drake dreamed of what it would be like to pilot one of those Torrents and watch as the enemies scattered in fear of him hosing them down with laser fire as well as some of the commandant’s prized weapons he was able to win from some party he attended at the beginning of the new century. When his boss came back, and yelled at his pilots to unload his haul, drake drooled at the shiny Torrent sitting in the crate along with a handful of newly acquired weapons that the Commandant had won. The Commandants gambling addiction was known across 12 sectors. He would gamble for a chance at some of the best mechs and gear every chance he could afford to. The only problem was he was really good at it, he had once won three mechs playing dice on the mystery vortex, currently two of which were in his lines.

As Drake helped unload everything, he was jumping for joy at the chance to pilot this soon to be beast of a mech, until he noticed the sign the boss had put on it before it had even got here: Field Strip it, and Shelve it until the 2nd Skriag is fully upgraded. Drake’s heart plummeted into his stomach. That meant that this beautiful mech wouldn’t see the light of day for at least a year or so and by then he couldn’t guarantee that he would be the first one to pilot it.

The Commandant was of course a busy man, working on projects and had been sending out his men post haste to earn up more niodes for preparations for the next Clan War that was inevitably on the horizon. Drake worked extra hard, fighting against bosses like Tory, who the Commandant had a thing for, and Titan, one of the Commandant’s biggest rivals. Drake noticed that the Commandant’s weapons were sorely lacking and were no longer punching through enemies that they had once annihilated just a few months prior. So he came up with a plan, the boss had been discussing with some of the other Commanders in the RND league about him needing to field strip all of his mechs and reduce the waste and get his team ready for the next CW ahead of schedule, but he wasn’t sure on when he would do so. After the Commandant’s meeting Drake walked up to his employer and made him an offer that he couldn’t refuse.

“Sir, I couldn’t help overhearing that your wanting to start prepping for the next Clan War.” Drake stated as he saluted his employer.

“I am. What of it.” Commandant Wise said as he looked the pilot in the eye.

“Well, I am willing to put in all of the work for it if you’re willing to give me first crack at that sweet Torrent you got. “ Drake said with his eyes on the prize he so wanted.

“I am not about to let just any pilot get his hands on the best mech I’ve got under my command just for anything. You come to me with an inventory, a new load out for my max line and a proposal on what should go and what should replace them then we will talk. And until then I will not hear another word about it, and while you’re at it I want you to personally go polish the Torrent before its locked up in storage, and I want two coats of wax on it, not just one.” The Commandant stated as he started to walk off towards his office.

Drake stood there and wanted to punch something, the Commandant was the biggest cheapskate in three sectors and he knew it, but the one thing the Commandant was above that was loyal to his pilots. So if he had any hope of getting his hands on that Torrent, he would have to work his butt off. So, Drake walked off to go polish the Torrent as it was finished being field stripped by the Chief Mechanic, Michael “Blitz” Price.

Drake yelled, “Blitz, I need that mech when you’re done with it. The boss just ordered me to polish that thing before you store it.” Michael looked up at Drake who had finally made it from the main office to the main hanger where he was standing.

“You’re welcome to it, but use the mech hauler; I haven’t finished rewiring the controls yet.” Michael said as he grabbed a bite of his sandwich, and looked over the schematics of the Torrent. “You know that is going to be one hell of a mech once the boss gets a hold of the next sale. From what I hear, he is talking about making this his next priority after he finishes specing out his prized Skriag that he has had Vincent pilot for the last year. Plus with the new Skriag moved currently to the mop up line, we should be able to get a hell of a good run out of it as well.” Michael commented as Drake looked over his shoulder at the specs he was reading.

“You don’t say, well I made a deal with the boss and if I can get a complete list of the current weapons inventory and a list of what’s available from your contact, he might let me get my hands on this bad boy and take her for a spin.” Drake nodded towards the Torrent.

“Well I guess I can help you with that, as long as I don’t have to do any more pulling of weapons for a while. The boss has kept me busy with getting the whole damn force upgraded minus the Nakshi and that there Torrent. He said he can’t afford to upgrade everything until the parts go on sale.” Michael said as he finished his sandwich.

Drake nodded, and then ran to hanger three where there was an unused mech hauler sitting there. It was obvious that the boss had been on a tear recently and had been pushing his pilots since the start of the year. This next Clan War was going to be different; they had left behind several of their allies to move up the ranks to the top of the tier, the 82nd Omicrons’, the top of the RND chain. The last couple of years had been great working with the Immortals, but the boss had set his sights on the prizes and fame that were in the higher divisions. He wasn’t about to let the boss down.

As he got the Torrent loaded onto the Hauler, he noticed something. Wrote next to the cockpit, where the pilots name is to be put, was Commandant Wise. Drake just slumped over, well that was it, and this was to be the boss man’s new mech. Drake couldn’t blame him. The boss had been piloting an Oggun for the last 10 years and giving up all of the better mechs to his other pilots. But it was sad that he wouldn’t get to pilot this bad boy even once. He knew that the Commandant would never let anyone pilot his own private mech. So he got to waxing.

Several hours and 4 drums of wax later, Drake finally finished the last bit of polish onto the Torrent. It was a thing of beauty to behold. It shined from every light that shone on it. He might not get to pilot it, but it would be a sight to see never the less. Drake heard a whistle and turned around.
“That there is one of the sexiest pieces of machine I have ever had my hands in. Well you did a hell of a job there Drake.” Michael commented. “Anyway, here is that contact info, and our current budget. You’re welcome to it.”

Drake nodded and looked at the budget; it was a lot bigger than he thought. The boss definitely was a cheapskate and was happy he was, sitting there in the budget was now over 120 niodes. There was almost enough niodes to gamble, for another shot at getting a second Torrent. So Drake spent the night going through the stockpile of weapons that they had on hand and going over the weapons that were available to order. He had one shot at this and he wasn’t going to lose.

The next morning, tired beyond belief, Drake walked into the Commandant’s office and laid out his plan. The Commandant sat there, his hands interlaced as he listened to his pilot go over the inventory, what could be replaced what was still of use, and what they could buy. At the end, Drake made his gamble.

“And after everything is purchased we will have over 150 niodes, enough to purchase another niode mech, particularly, another Torrent. Which if we got a hold of this mech now we could save us from having to work with only one of these.” Drake stated.

“Excellent work, but I want to make a few adjustments. I will look over your plan and have Michael come in and talk with me once he has a moment.” Commandant Wise said as he looked over the inventory and outline of Drake’s plan.

Drake walked out and told Michael that once he was done. Michael grumbled and dived back into the cockpit of the Sever he had been repairing after its recent battle. Drake spent the rest of the day loading his Ammonite with ammo, and doing a system check. As he was signing out for the evening he saw that the boss was driving off towards the docks, probably to go gamble with his friends.
Later that evening, the Commandant was walking back from the pub when he felt an itch that just needed to be scratch, he needed to go play some dice and win him something fun. He went to the gambling hall and saw that they had another Torrent up for grabs.

He couldn’t resist so he walked over to the table and placed his bet on the dice roll for three chances at some vortex items. He took the dice in his hand and rolled. He watched as the dice rolled across the table. He knew that the Torrent would give him the edge that his team would need in these next few years. But he never could out right buy a mech when he could get more than what it is worth at the table. So he watched as the dice fell into place. He smiled.

The next morning, Drake woke up to the boss standing above him. “Wake up; you’ve got work to do. And I expect the plan to be adjusted once you go over the new inventory I picked up last night.” Drake sat up and frowned.

“You went out and gambled again last night, I saw you. Please don’t tell me you gambled away the Torrent, boss.” Drake moaned.

“It’s my job to run this outfit and there is no one pilot guaranteed any mech until I get a hold of it. So feel lucky that you’re employed and have a mech worth piloting.” Commandant Wise said as he walked off towards his office.

Drake crawled out of his bunk and headed for the field to get to work when he couldn’t believe his eyes. Sitting on the field next to a weapon’s crate was a brand new Torrent. As he walked up to look it over he saw Michael up near the cockpit painting a name under it. He was painting Drake Morningstar.

Twas The Night Before Clan Wars By Monk Malone AKA "SGT" Ron Frye#879655

'Twas the night before clan wars,
and all thru the bay,
not a wrench was moving,
everyone gone for the day.

Monk, in his overalls,
a cuppa in his lap,
had just settled down,
for a liquor laced nap.

The mecha's were stored,
all snug in their stalls,
ready and waiting,
for the first battle calls.

When out on the drill floor,
There rose such a cacophony,
That Monk fell out of his chair,
And spilled his "quote" coffee.

He ran thru the locker room,
and out into the service dock,
still pulling on his boots,
and cursing his socks.

When what to his bloodshot,
eyes should appear,
a shiny new red ant,
it's origins, unclear.

It's pilot was hidden,
behind smoky, bullet proof, Plexiglas,
but it's voice on the loudspeaker,
put Monk on his ass.

It touched off it's jump jets,
from it's engines came a whistle,
and shot into the air,
like a short range guidance missile.

It landed on a hover platform,
and locked in it's sights,
on the now prostrate form,
of our hero in his plight.

"I come from the Clan of Censor's,
my fine little fellow.",
Came the words from the mech,
Like a digital bellow.

"Your words are offending,
your prose lacking and low,
and your grammar and syntax,
have MUCH room to grow."

"We have read your articles,
and smart ass little rants,
and we are sick of your nonsense,
you puny piss ant!"

"So take this as a warning,
clean up your act,
and prepare to type up,
a massive retract!"

Monk sat up and blinked,
thru whiskey shocked eyes,
then started to laugh,
so hard that he cried.

"What's so damn funny!"
The pilot demanded,
"Explain yourself, scum,
or prepare to be back handed!"

"Oh, please forgive me,"
The hysterical tech sobbed,
"But you are standing,
On a H.E. ammo pod!"

Then with a flick of his thumb,
Monk tapped the trigger,
To a remote detonator,
And ran with much younger vigor.

As mech parts rained,
All over the hall,
Monk exuberantly shouted,
"Happy Clan Wars, Y'all!"
