The Ethereal Universe: Plimpton's Cosmic Turtle by Nathan Justin Weiser #817890

Hello and Welcome, to the first edition of a new series in which we wish to look in on the natural world of our Galaxy. I am Nathan Weiser and I will be your guide to this mysterious and wondrous world that is often overlooked in our world of extreme industry, super science and harsh warfare. For out first edition, I thought we could look in on one of the most massive and beautiful creatures that has survived millenia of change completely unchanged, Plimpton's Cosmic Turtle.

Discovered by Zendor Plimpton in the year 3029, this creature glides slowly through the depths of space consuming resources mostly from uninhabited asteroids, but sometimes also filter feeding on galactic dust clouds. This journey is, for the turtle, one that we all yearn for at a base level, and that is to mate. It appears that the turtle, through some unknown sense, is able to find trace evidence of the travels of other turtles. The whole of the observed race appear to be hermaphroditic. This is likely due to the slight chance of encounters between the creatures, allowing for procreation under any circumstances.

As noted, these creatures are massive in size, reaching lengths of nearly 10 miles. Though these resemble the turtles of old Earth, it is in name only as they share traits with many kingdoms. This includes their proclivity for live birth, usually of just one offspring. Interestingly, there is a large difference in the birth size of these creatures and their full adult size, though the children are often still 100 yards or more in length. Tracking from the beginning of one of their lives to current day has yet to find a Cosmic Turtle reaching it's full adult size, suggesting that these creatures are extremely long lived, possibly multiple millennia.

On a more serious note, poaching of these creatures have grown more and more detrimental as warfare technology has increased exponentially. In an effort to protect these beautiful animals, a galaxy wide treaty has been put in place that creates an organization dedicated to protecting their way of life. They operate by following these creatures at a safe distance as to not disturb their habits, yet still close enough to defend against attacks by pirates and poachers.

That is all for today, I hope that you have enjoyed this foray into The Ethereal Universe. For Galaxy Gathering news network, this is Nathan Weiser. Thank you and goodnight.
