The Lore of the Land by David McCallum #701548

I admit it, I'm a sucker for the background material that goes with games.

It's possibly because In my younger days I was an avid reader, but I can certainly recall picking up a set of war game rules and reading through the "fluff text" before bothering with the actual rules mechanics.

From memory (and showing my age here..) I think the best example was a supplement to the Games Workshop game Space Hulk called "Deathwing". It involved a tale of genetically modified soldiers that had been drawn from the descendants of native American Indians. In a desperate mission with no chance of reinforcements, they call upon the power of their ancestors and ancient tribal beliefs to aid them.

Its a crying shame that this evocative tale has been all but buried and ignored in later releases of the game, even though the Deathwing unit still remains as some of their most elite troops.

What has this got to do with Mecha Galaxy?

Well, unless you are blind, you must by now have noticed that a lot of work is going into revamping the narrative around the game. A complete redo of Cogwerk port with a vastly expanded narrative and some new colourful characters. Older mechs are having their stats revamped along with a redo of technical and origin descriptions. Not to mention the raid narratives we have had leading from Drocha to Xerxes and Bismarck.

So it leads me to some questions for you, our dear readers...

Firstly, are you in it for the game only, and unlike me don't actually give two hoots about the narrative?

If you do like the fluff parts of games and the associated in-game lore, what is your opinion of the improvements being made?

And finally do you prefer it if existing lore is adhered to, or would you be fine with retcons of specific items? If so, to what extent?

I'm interested in your thoughts, so remember to pop your comments below along with your player ID number and your views will earn you some niodes.
