CW3323 Pre-War Interview With Frank Stechman #52792 By John Ringo #899287

GG: Today we have Frank Stechman in the Galaxy Gathering studio. Welcome Frank, can I offer you something from the wet bar or a cigar from General Nova’s private stock?

Frank: Why thank you very much, a nice cheroot would be good as well as some of that very fine aged scotch you seem to have hidden in the back.

*Pours two large glasses of "Abbott's Reserve" and gives one to Frank*

GG: Thanks for taking the time to talk to me today. Let's get started!

GG: For the record, what is your name, ID number and the clan you are fighting with in this war?

Frank: I am Frank Stechman, #52792 proud member of AFF this battle with the MG Defenders.  just pointing out we all are mercs for sale to the highest bidder but I have a lot of loyalty to those that helped me learn the biz.

GG: What are you most looking forward to this war?

Frank: This is going to be a new challenge for me. I have been bumped up to Div 2.  Will be fun seeing how I do with the big boys. Our specs have not been made public yet so sorry if you want that info you are going to have to wait like everybody else.

Frank: Just a heads up the speed increase on missiles from the hard-working teams has pretty much have everybody scrambling to see what to do with their formation.

Frank: Personally I nearly wet myself when I saw the reports of how much better the missiles are now...  ermm  maybe this scotch needs a refill if you want any more thoughts.

GG: I will never ask anyone to give up clan secrets. You are free to answer as much as you are comfortable with. *Pours another round and slides a glass across the desk to Frank*

GG: Grats on your first war in D2. I hope it is everything you wish for.

GG: There are 4 specialists this war. Do you enjoy running a specialist formation or do you enjoy fighting as an unlimited more?

Frank: I like that question Johnny.  The only way I am competitive is if I utilize specialties, I have been working them for a long time some are good, some ok, but at the very least I can get out of the battle with enough mechs moving to sell off the salvage and repair and rebuild for the next time..  I learn and earn just bit every fight 🙂

GG: haha that is a very good attitude there Frank *Grin*

GG: This war every clan must have an SRB specialist to enter. Are you a fan of a clan being required to have a specialist just to enter the war?

Frank: Aye, in fact I would like to see a cw were everybody needs be a specialist
hmm   this glass seems to be getting low again, why do I need to ask?

Frank: oh, did I shock you with that? Just think on it a bit hehe, talk about a level playing field especially in the lower ranks.

*Another full glass shows up next to Frank as if by magic*

GG: That would be very messy for sure lol. I wonder how many clans would sit that kind of war out.

GG: Do you think Nick will give a bonus prize to the SRB specialists this war like he did for the 20T guys last war?

Frank: well that is a good question, as I have said before I see no need to bribe peeps to play but then again, we are all mercenaries and every small favor may make a difference in the next battle.  *salute lifting the fine scotch whiskey*

GG: Everyone likes getting paid *Smile*

GG: Which specialist formation do you least enjoy fighting against and why?

Frank: 40 ton without a doubt. to many gold winners, end of story.

GG: This war missiles are getting a +50 Speed boost. Are you excited about this and will this change how you set up your formations?

Frank: Already done what I could soon as I saw that, is a game breaker for many formations.  The only drawback to missile mechs is their speed, will be some wild and crazy battles.

GG: More Power! More Destruction! You heard it here first folks!

GG: What clan do you most enjoy fighting against and why?

Frank: Haha  you expect me to fire up the beast,  not gonna happen.. I prefer to lay in wait and hit when I can.

GG: Enough said *Smile*

GG: Is there something in your career as a mech jockey you are proud about and would like to share?

Frank: Getting my first gold was a real rush, played for a long time and never made it to the top, got 4 now and feel a lot better about how I work my squads.

GG: Sounds like you are making good progress. I remember my first Gold Kotm win. It was very exciting!

GG: Is there anything else you would like to add or a shout out to a friend or foe you would like to give?

Frank: Just looking forward to this CW, have heard through the grapevine that some not bother with them because they level to fast. IMHO just get in there and battle there should be some serious negative effects for those that want to "camp".

GG: Today's PSA is provided by Frank Stechman. Frank says "MOAR Fighting!!"

GG: Thanks for stopping by the studio today Frank. It was a real pleasure having a chance to talk to you again. I wish you and your crew the best.

Frank: Thanks, best of luck to you and you clan.

CW3323 Pre-War Interview With Don Davis #398405 By John Ringo #899287

GG: Today we have Don Davis in the Galaxy Gathering studio. Welcome Don, can I offer you something from the wet bar or a cigar from General Nova’s private stock?

Don: I'm fine, thanks!

GG: Not a problem. We only offer the best to our guests here at GG. Thanks for taking the time to talk with me again Don. Your interview last war was a fan favorite and well read. Ok let's get down to it!

GG: For the record, what is your name, ID number and the clan you are fighting with in this war?

Don: Don Davis, 398405, CLAN: Juggernaut

GG: What are you most looking forward to this war?

Don: I'm pretty excited about the Strangelove Clan War, LOL - I've been building missile capability behind my overall Fire specialty for almost a year now.  It'll be interesting to see how the damage and weapon hits change.

GG: Yeah, the +50 speed to missiles this war was an interesting announcement that Nick made yesterday. It will be interesting to see if these changes affect how people fight this war.

GG: There are 4 specialists this war. Do you enjoy running a specialist formation or do you enjoy fighting as an unlimited more?

Don: I'm happy either way, but I rarely get a chance to be one of the designated specs.

GG: Sounds like you might have to take that up with the boss and put your foot down *Wink*

GG: This war every clan must have an SRB specialist to enter. Are you a fan of a clan being required to have a specialist just to enter the war?

Don: I can't say that's my favorite requirement.  In a lot of cases, I can see where that would significantly undermine the basic purpose of specialists - which is primarily defensive.  A lot depends on the chosen spec.  Common specs aren't so bad, but I can see how that could get stupid really quick if something like a 25-ton spec was chosen, where you have some players with half a formation of Novums and others who haven't won a Novum in over two years.

GG: Yes, I can see how the more rare specs could be a larger disruption to the event like that.

GG: Do you think Nick will give a bonus prize to the SRB specialists this war like he did for the 20T guys last war?

Don: I have no idea, but it seems like a trend.

GG: If he does I am sure the MOAR crowd will not complain unless they were not a SRB spec and missed out on the free loot *Laughs*

GG: Which specialist formation do you least enjoy fighting against and why?

Don: Well I'd say 25T for the very reason mentioned above.  People that have a significant advantage by sheer chance as opposed to skill, investment or diligence tend to prevail there.

GG: Point taken Don *Smile*

GG: This war missiles are getting a +50 Speed boost. Are you excited about this and will this change how you set up your formations?

Don: Of course, it prompts a change in formations.  To what extent and how to manage that is what makes some players more effective.  To me, that gets back into the essence of what is enjoyable about the game on the individual player level.  Clan Leader stuff, rosters and playing Field General is on a different level, but this causes me to go back in and reevaluate my formations in a way that helps alleviate the kind of stagnation that sets in once everybody *thinks* they know who they can and can't beat.  Shaking things up at that level is a good thing.

GG: Do you see this speed boost effecting how this war will go in D1?

Don: I don't think it will be enough of an effect to change final medal outcomes in Div 1.  I see no indication that this will favor one Clan vs. another in any measurable sense.  Where we will see some changes is maybe in some of the individual matchups and overall formation performance.

GG: I am sure the clan who watch you guys slug it out will find it interesting to see how this plays out.

GG: What clan do you most enjoy fighting against and why?

Don: It varies.  Of course, we most respect those that don't just throw in the towel.  As we've seen in the last two wars, the way the multipliers align and stack now, anything is possible.  The important thing is to take your best shot and try to apply what you've learned.  Otherwise, the prizes you get will certainly not be what makes the difference for you in any other war.  Some clans get beat, while others are defeated.  There's a difference...

GG: Very true words Don. Let's hope more pilots listen to this and find the courage to pick up that stone and throw it at the giant they are facing.

GG: What clan do you least enjoy fighting against and why?

Don: Well, I'm not gonna call anybody out.  What I said about not throwing in the towel applies.  If the shoe fits...

GG: Fair enough Don *Smile*

GG: Is there something in your career as a mech jockey you are proud about and would like to share?

Don: Well, being the first "Legendary Pilot" was a pretty cool thing, but what I'm most proud of is the success that Kris and I have had working together in the Dual-Clan Leader dynamic.  It's just one of those inexplicable things that just works.

GG: Yeah most of the time sharing the leadership role gets messy. You both did a good job though *Smile*

GG: Is there anything else MG's first Legendary Pilot would like to add or a shout out to a friend or foe you would like to give?

Don: Just good luck to all, and we'll see everybody planetside.

GG: Thanks Don for stopping by. It was a pleasure having you in the studio again. My best to you and your crew.

Don: Thanks and keep up the great work at GG!

A Ballad Of Fire And Ice By German Jaramillo #685605

A song of fire and ice, you must believe it
Was sung by a bard who witnessed it
Twenty-seven seasons more had the bunny boss
who with disdain the dragon of the north wind looked
Does that nosy man try to dethrone King Bunny?
We are glorious, we are proud, we are bunnies!
You, dragon, back your flight to the lower regions!
But the young dragon was not intimidated by Mr. Bunny
And struck in the midst of the storm of fire and ice
What is this dish you want to eat?
Arrogant dragon, I kick you right away!
With a kick, the rabbit knocks down the dragon
But the dragon flies, and rising, showed the teeth
Look I'm hungry, proud rabbit, be ware
I've heard your stories of glory and tinsel
And I'm willing to stick you with my teeth
You seem to have a white skin like snow
And underneath I guess a pink and juicy meat
I'll try to see if your mech bleeds if I hurt him.
Do not you dare, back, back off! away the carrots!
He said with horror and disgust the rabbit
How dare an inferior being touch my real hide?
And in the middle of the storm they began a quarrel
See that you are not worthy of my glorious stories!
Said the bunny: only Juggernaut, Leviathan or Zeon!
The dragon did not stop stalking the rabbit
And jingling, the rabbit was most enraged.
A fight broke out, teeth and fangs, fire and ice
Ten times ten tossed each other into the void
But in the end the dragon was laughing wildly
Do not you see that these are my elements?
On the ice were my scales forged in Caissa
Through the fire, I received in Dragons my baptism
And so, today is the time for another author
The one who writes about stories of glory
And the dragon rose, leaving the rabbit thoughtful
And somewhat chilled and roasted, almost to dish
So, take, take the gold, greedy dragon!
That I will see from down here as you star
When you get to the first division of a stroke
That I here will laugh, licking my wounds
That other stories open to tell, that have no end
That I know, the dragon said from above
But in the meantime, I will discover the secret
How to taunt a bunny with a joking tale
Don't dare take it so serious, as this is a game

But today, the skald shall sing a different tale.

Clan war 3322

Today was like any other day training and making adjustments to clans when an incoming transmission came in. It was XEON wanting to have a peace meeting. We agreed to meet with them, they said they have been monitoring things in our dimension and wanted to help us rid the galaxy of the Unification Forces.

As we’re leery of anyone outside our dimension we meet them with caution and a plan. They were in need of a safe entry place into our dimension and security force, they offered some nice tech unseen in our dimension for our assistance and asked if we could change our name to XEON as well. We told them we needed a few days to think it over and would get back to them.

We made our decision and made plans and contacted them. We agreed to help them as the Unification Force has been a serious thorn in the side of the galaxy. During this meeting plans were hashed out on a location for them to set up a small force with access to needed equipment and weapons factories. Also at this meeting we had a couple scouts tag several of their leaders mechs with tracking devices.

Clan wars was approaching fast and we changed our name and started our preparations for upcoming war. A message came in from XEON stating we needed to change the name on all clans, we had one clan go rogue and didn’t change their name and no comm from them. XEON said to let them go as they were not need to fulfil their mission.

By the end of the third battle our scouts were reporting back that the numbers of XEON forces were way larger then plans and that had spread across the galaxy in strategic places. The race was now on to regroup our forces and strike a counter attack against them…..THE TIME IS NOW…...CLAN WARS 3323……...The {AFF} IS BACK Time to get back to protect our MG universe!

CW3322 Post Event Interview With Joshua Bourne #702128 By John Ringo #899287

Having just finished up my last interview and set it up to be published in the morning I drained the last of the Scotch in my glass and got up to head back to my barracks to hit the rack. The intercom on my desk buzzed. It was the night watchman letting me know I had one more pilot looking for an interview. I told him to send the pilot up and walked over to the wet bar to start a pot of coffee and changed my mind and filled my glass up with more Scotch. Time to get back to work!

GG: For the record what is your name, player ID, clan you fought with this last CW and what medal did you win?

Joshua: My name is Joshua Bourne, I.D. 702128, the clan I'm in is Northwind Dragons and we won Gold this war in Division 3.

GG: Thanks for taking the time to talk with me today Joshua. It is a pleasure to have your here again. Congratulations on your team's Gold win this war.

GG: Did your team perform like you expected?

Joshua: I can assure you, the pleasure is mine. This War, our team had a fairly easy time as our main competition, Collectors, went up to Division 2.

GG: Yeah the fortunes of war and all that *Smile*

GG: Was there anything you found to be a surprise this war?

Joshua: I think the thing that surprised me the most this war was the fact that next to no opposing Pilots put up a stiff competition against us. They tended to just either leave their mechas out in the field with no one gunning them, or taking a couple pot shots before leaving the field of battle for the remainder of the round.

GG: Yes when faced with a stiff enemy pilots react in different ways. Some do not want to eat a lot of XP for a round they feel will be a loss. We all have to make our choice.

GG: This war every clan needed a 20T specialist to get in the game. Were pilots quick to volunteer for this in your clan or did you guys have to draw straws?

Joshua: I happily took on the 20T as it was a necessity and I felt like I was the weakest in the unit.

GG: Ok so because you felt like you had one of the weaker unlimited formations on the team it would make a logical choice to take the 20T role.

GG: What are your thoughts on the secret bonus prizes given out to the 20T guys this war?

Joshua: I like the fact I got another prize from the war, in the form of a level 10 Commissar, but it won't really benefit me much other than a small handful of niodes. At my level it would take too long to get it into a fighting state.

GG: You never turn down a chance at some Niodes for sure *Smile*

GG: Should Nick always give out bonus prizes when we have to have a specialist just to get in the war?

Joshua: I think it will give people a good reason to use a spec they might not like or prefer to use, as then they get something out of it like either a weapon, some resources or even a new mecha for them to use in their lineup.

GG: Yeah it would have been nice if these bonus prizes were around when I was the 10T specialist when it was a required spec 4 or so wars ago *Smile*

GG: How hard was the Raid for your team?

Joshua: The raid wasn't an issue for us, as we were able to coordinate effectively to take it down efficiently and quickly.

GG: Teamwork for the win!

GG: Are the Raid Prizes useful for your team or do you just sell most of it for needed Niodes?

Joshau: For us in Division 3, it is filled with the highest tonnage and latest Mechas we could ask for. Pikes, Fexts, Balrogs. The list goes on. What we lack however is the very high level weapons to pull from the raids. They are quite "lackluster" for the Division they are giving them to us, and also the prize payouts themselves seem to be very minimal as well, with people noticing Niode weapons seem to be "capped" at a maximum of 3, and the number of mechas pulled in total is barely noticeable.

GG: Yeah over the last year there has been lots of speculation about behind the scenes adjustment to the raid loot algorithms and "Caps" on payouts etc. I doubt there will ever be an official announcement or acknowledgment of these kind of changes if they are real.

GG: In your opinion, what does Nick and his team do very well in this game?

Joshua: What they do in this game is allowing a group of players from around the world to band together and fight as a coordinated unit to try and achieve victory. That's probably the best thing any designer and team could do.

GG: Yeah the main reason I stick around in this game is playing with my mates *Smile*

GG: In your opinion, what could Nick and his team do better in this game?

Joshua: I think there is a couple things they could to. Add some more things for people to do whilst there isn't a war on for one. Yes, there are the "Get X wins in X area" missions, but they only offer a small handful of niodes and bring a fair bit of salt and would also be a quick thing to finish and be bored once more. Secondly, make the raids more profitable for each player. Personally, I had to pretty much solo a raid single handedly on a lower level account, level 4 times, get 13 shares total and only getting a measly amount of rewards and a total of 3 mechas. That shouldn't be a thing for how much effort you put in to begin with. And finally, make some more mechas that benefit the lower level players. Yes, you have added in the Daemon and Onyx as of late, but being completely honest they suck until level 100+. The lower levels need something good for them rather than seeing constantly new 100T+ mechas, or mechas that don't benefit them till they level up another 50+ times.

GG: Those are some very valid points for Nick to consider. I hope he reads this interview so he and his team can talk about it.

GG: Before we wrap this up is there anything you would like to add?

Joshua: I'd just like to thank all the players out there who makes this community possible.

GG: I will also add in my thanks to the Devs and the players. Without all of us this game would not work and I would have to find something else to do *Grin*

GG: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview Joshua. It is always a great pleasure to have you in the studio and I hope you stop by again next war. My best to you and your crew.

CW3322 Post Event Interview With Mortem Orbisque #907239 By John Ringo #899287

No sooner had I finished a quick tour though the wet bar in my office when I had another pilot looking to talk about the last war.

GG: For the record what is your name, player ID, clan you fought with this last CW and what medal did you win?

Mortem: Mortem Orbisque - #907239 - Emerald Dragons. Unfortunately we only managed to take a silver medal this war

GG: Welcome to the studio. Yeah we all strive to win but sometimes it does not work out.

GG: Did your team perform like you expected?

Mortem: Almost, we had a few small challenges with some of the fresh additions but overall I think we had a pretty good showing. the gold fight was a close one right down to the wire and we faced a clan that was designed specifically to fight against us.

GG: Was there anything you found to be a surprise this war?

Mortem: The biggest surprise was the secret extra prizes for the mandated 20T specialists.

GG: Yes that was a surprise for everyone. Now we just have to wait and see if this was a one off or a sign of things to come.

GG: Was there anything you found to be a disappointment this war?

Mortem: Nothing really comes to mind. The war was fun as always and the raid seemed easier than usual and with a stroke of luck I actually won a mecha in the raid so I really can't complain about much this time around

GG: Grats on the mech win. That is always a good feeling.

GG: Back to the bonus prizes for the 20T specs. Should Nick always give out bonus prizes when we have to have a specialist just to get in the war?

Mortem: I think it is a fair compensation for requiring a certain specialist just to enter into the event. By making that requirement it narrows the tactical options a clan has so getting a extra prize to offset is a good thing.

GG: Were pilots quick to volunteer for this 20T spec in your clan or did you guys have to draw straws?

Mortem: I would say neither really happened. It was a lengthy discussion trying to figure out who had the best 20T formation among our members.

GG: Are the Raid Prizes useful for your team or do you just sell most of it for needed Niodes?

Mortem: Last war when we had a gold raid the prizes were useful. This time around with a silver raid not so much. I personally am on the fence but leaning towards selling off some of my low tonnage mechs and equipment to better feed my unlimited formation.

GG: That is a tough question for sure. I wish you the best as you think it over.

GG: In your opinion, what does Nick and his team do very well in this game?

Mortem: I think nick and his team are doing a great job of content creation. There has been a wonderful stream of new mechs and equipment for players at all levels.

GG: In your opinion, what could Nick and his team do better in this game?

Mortem: It would be great if the devs could improve the speed and accuracy of fixing problems with players accounts. Take for instance mine, from day one I have never been able to receive gifts. So no IUK's, no hatoraide, no stims, no seed crystals etc. I have brought this to nicks attention on multiple occasions and nothing is resolved. I understand that glitches happen and I have seen some people get resolution on the players page but I doubt I am the only one who has had technical difficulties go unresolved.
GG: Ouch that is rough. IUK's are the backbone on free leveling niode mechs. Let us hope Nick reads this and takes another look at the problem for you.

GG: Before we wrap this up is there anything you would like to add?

Mortem: It would be great if there were other options for earning niodes in game. maybe something like a daily bonus for logging in and on consecutive days or some other way of earning niodes besides videos that sometimes work, circuit fights that are sometimes impossible to win in due to unpredictable level brackets, and missions that rarely drop noides.

GG: Good food for thought there.

GG: It was a pleasure having you in for this interview. Thanks for stopping by and I wish you and your crew the best.

Mortem: Thank you for taking the time to interview me. Good luck to you as well.

CW3322 Post Event Interview With Frank Stechman #52792 By John Ringo #899287

As Don was leaving the lobby in walked another pilot wanting to share his experiences in the last war.

GG: For the record what is your name, player ID, clan you fought with this last CW and what medal did you win?

Frank: Frank Stechman 52792. We were in division 5 and managed a silver. Ended up battling family for gold and they were a bit higher up the ladder than us, wasn't much of a fight. First 2 battles we won handily with some wins stashed just in case.

GG: Welcome to the studio Frank. Yeah slugging it out against an ally for Gold can be tough.

GG: Did your team perform like you expected?

Frank: Yes, everybody played smart which is the most important thing in wars, test and know who you can handle and who to stay away from. Defensive wins are such a nice bonus.

GG: Great teamwork is key *Smile*

GG: Was there anything you found to be a surprise this war?

Frank: I found it surprising how few decent 20 ton set-ups there are out there. Is a relatively cheap line-up to assemble, I thought just about everybody would have one. Turns out I was wrong.

GG: Yes I have found a good chunk of the pilots in this game do not like specs and do not put a lot of time into building or updating those formations.

GG: Was there anything you found to be a disappointment this war?

Frank: That is really a mistake not to start making specs right away. I am not saying they all need to ne niodes but many crystal line-up succeed better than any  would expect. It is actually the only way to compete with those that have deep pockets and are several levels higher than you.  I think they do a nice job setting up the divisions, even if I hate it at times they try and keep it fair.

GG: This war every clan needed a 20T specialist to get in the game. Were pilots quick to volunteer for this in your clan or did you guys have to draw straws?

Frank: We had a few volunteers but the leader made the final decision. It was a nice surprise for them to get a mech as a reward  for taking the lead.

GG: Should Nick always give out bonus prizes when we have to have a specialist just to get in the war?

Frank: I would not want to see that precedent started. CW's are fun as it is, I don't see the need to bribe players to participate, though throwing in something special now and then just as an added incentive would not be a bad idea.

GG: How hard was the Raid for your team?

Frank: We got it done, was no big problem. As usual some sit out to try and not level up but for the most part we had great participation and everybody like the rewards ...  for a change.

GG: Are the Raid Prizes useful for your team or do you just sell most of it for needed Niodes?

Frank: I think many are very useful, it really depends on your level and what you are already fielding with your mechs. Personally I probably used 70% and sold off the rest.

GG: I personally find it very nice when I can use the items I win in the raid.

GG: In your opinion, what does Nick and his team do very well in this game?

Frank: By far the fact that Nick is so responsive to the players  makes this game unique. I have been playing another game for about 7 years and it is almost impossible to get a response from dev's even on abuse/cheating situations. That is what makes this so refreshing, is that not just Nick but the whole dev team that monitors the game and fixes stuff as quickly as they can.  Thanks Nick!! much appreciated  🙂

GG: In your opinion, what could Nick and his team do better in this game?

Frank: I have a couple of game problems that need to be addressed. Not sure if they can be in a browser format  but here goes.

1) The hanger needs to be reworked. It is just fine for level 100 and less but after that you started getting lag  and more lag. Can't see all your weapons even when you click view all weps a few times, equipment hanger is even worse. I literally have to go up and down the list looking instead of wearable being grouped at the top and the little white block is not always accurate.

2) We need to be able to work on formations while not affecting the active formation. this is a huge need in clan wars  and KOTM when  you want to redo a glaring weakness but at the present time dare not remove the active formation.

GG: Yeah I have issues sometimes looking for things when I am formation building and I am only level 44 *Smile*

GG: Before we wrap this up is there anything you would like to add?

Frank: I would just like to thank all of you folks that take the time and effort to add a flavor to the game with your articles and analysis. Again, this is unique to the Mecha Galaxy universe and helps us all enjoy the game that much more, Kudos.

GG: You are very welcome. Well Frank it has been a pleasure having you in for an interview today. I hope we can do this again next war. My best to you and your crew.

Frank: Thanks for listening, be well and good hunting

Requiem Of Division 6 By Daniel Chung #323564

Scott Abbott: Prepare for war

Three words. Three simple words but with unimaginable impact. Long had those three words been last uttered in the comms channel. It was going to be a brutal fight to the bitter end. Or so intelligence had reported.

Clan Phoenix. The one clan that could slay the Dragons.

Two magnificent creatures, one of myth, the other of legend. This will be the fight that shatters the skies of heaven and drown the earth in seas of fire. At last a worthy opponent, a foe deserving to unleash the utmost vile brutality of Clan Tiamat Dragons.

All through the clan, preparations were underway. Mechs were prepped, weapons loaded, checked and reconfigured. Equipment’s were tested and unloaded and retested again to find even a minute extra increase in efficiency.

But yet, in the midst of all the testing and preparation, an undercurrent of tension ran through the clan. Something that has not been felt for a long time. Did Clan Tiamat bit off more than they could chew? We were staring at a very likely prospect of defeat.

Comms channel was a hive of activity:

George Warren: If anyone is up for it can you test my lineup? I made some changes and I'd like to see how it works out against quality competition.

Scott Abbott: Phoenix will beat Tiamat, unless we play that fight smart

Michael Telladira: Agreed Scott

Terry Harper: xxxx is very strong, he has beaten me 5 times.

Scott Abbott: Once specs are known we need to make a ladder of available points

Michael Telladira: Kk. We should all save dodge bonus for Phoenix

Scott Abbott: Yes

Daniel Chung: damn... i so hope to get the 2nd ever boreas :’(

Kenneth Hicks: this is going to be a crushing 😃 xxxx has a decent 20t, we went 2-1.

Michael Telladira: How strong is Michael Coldwell can he make a clean run on Phoenix? If so we have a fighting chance. This fight with Phoenix we will need all dodge bonuses and superb smart plays if we want to win. Imo their weakest is xxxx

We were preparing for Phoenix all through First and Second rounds. Some of us held our fire across both rounds to equip the extra dodge at Phoenix.

Terry Harper: I can’t save my dodge bonus i am 50 xp from leveling right now.

Scott Abbott: Don't attack till that round

Tactics and strategies were discussed and discarded and agreed to be amended only to be changed again. But at the back of it all, the alien, never before felt feeling that we might actually face the unthinkable - defeat.

George Warren: We did the same thing in 1KH, sit back and watch at the beginning of a war, see what transpires, see if our perceptions of our victims were correct and make whatever adjustments may be needed.

Scott Abbott: I have a feeling BHG will do the same

George Warren: could be a low scoring fight

Jonathan Schattke: I think there are a few I know I can beat

Scott Abbott: I think the amount of money they have spent recently will overwhelm us

Daniel Chung: aghhh... can't help it if that’s the case. We keep our losses to the minimum then

Jonathan Schattke: xxxx is tough.. took me to my back row just to crack his frontline

So be it then. We fight, and fight to the bitter end! Let it be known far and wide, what price one pays to wrest the Gold from the clutches of the Dragons!

0000 HOURS

His Anti lay in ruins. It’s remaining functioning arm barely able to move. The rest of his company lay dead and burning. Mechs from elite Phoenix companies marched onwards, guns firing mercilessly.

He can’t eject, for his body was trapped in the wrecked cockpit. He won’t eject even if he can. Better to die insignificantly than run shamelessly. The cockpit deformation had pushed the HUD console into his chest. He can’t feel his lower body anymore. Blood gushed forth his lips in crimson rivulets. He had only moments left to live. A palm sized crack was his only available view outside.

Enemy mechs marched past his position left and right, ignoring the ruined Anti on its back. An enemy mech came into view and lumbered onwards, to step on the Anti like so much trash.

He managed to raise the Anti’s arm just enough to point its weapon at the enemy as his view was obliterated by the descending foot. He pressed the trigger and shouted defiantly:

“LONG LIVE THE DRAGONS!!!”
The Phoenix lashed at the Dragon. First blood had been drawn. And the heavens wept in tears of fire as Dragon and Phoenix fought for supremacy.

But then we saw it. Was it a mistake? Or were they so confident of their might that they’d leave one company open to mock us contemptuously? Whatever it may be, they shall rue! They shall weep! They shall PAY for their arrogance!

Terry Harper: XXXX IS OUT OF FORMATION

Daniel Chung: HE'S STILL OUT. HIT HIM HIT HIM NOWWW LOL shit man, we can easily nail 26 points here!

And onwards we fought, Tiamat companies the banners of Terry Harper , George Warren, Tom J Fong Jr.,Michael Coldwell and Jonathan Schattke heralded our offensive and hurled themselves at Phoenix companies. Shot up mechs return from the front only for the pilot to jump into a fresh unit and rushed to the front again.

Orders were savage. Forward! Keep moving! Keep on the pressure! Keep firing, keep firing dammit!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
0530 HOURS

Amidst the carnage came the price, a price we could ill afford to pay at this stage. We were gaining the upper hand, but we knew it was brittle and Phoenix could easily erase that when they launch their offensive. And we were losing far too many fights.

Daniel Chung: ye gods! guys, can I suggest we hold our attacks? we are leading 41-8. let them come and fight us to gain back the points. we are hitting blindly and giving unnecessary ol here

Michael Telladira: Damn xxxx beat Michael? Yea he dropped a ton of money

Scott Abbott: Yep

Michael Telladira: That's scary for us. That means xxxx can nearly clean sweep us probably. Michael you have any points left?

Michael Telladira: Also what about you terry? I think I can take xxxx. The rest are iffy. I count 48 easy points for them. Sit, Alex, myself, tom, hicks, Jon. They have 4 hitters.

Daniel Chung: defensive wins 7-2 in phoenix's favor. lets hope the 7 points does not come back to haunt us. xxxx is still out of formation. xxxx is jinxed. first fight kenneth hit and killed him with 2nd row. second fight kenneth lost. advisable not to touch him for now.

Scott Abbott: He has a volatile build based on crits I think.

Daniel Chung: possible. kenneth's 2nd fight had 8 of his main mechs critkilled. that crippled his lines.

Things were so bad at the front we lost track of the score nor who was in the fray, for it was all a mess of fire, of death, of victorious cries and agonizing screams of death.

Michael Telladira: Who has been hitting for us, hicks? I noticed we went from 51 to 59. Also another 2 points for Phoenix?

Scott Abbott: If Kenneth got us 8 points that is huge.

Michael Telladira: I'm guessing xxxx and the 20s not sure. Not gonna lie I hope we win but I'm happy it's not gonna be easy
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1100 HOURS

Score was 61-13 in Dragon’s favor. Long was the night, but the coming day is longer still. We had breached their lines and dealt untold destruction to their companies, but they held on stubbornly. We can’t afford more pyrrhic victories, for the Phoenix companies had yet to make their move.

Scott Abbott: Hang fire for now. xxxx is probably 3rd strongest and xxxx is strong too. xxxx and xxxx are weaker but not sure how they match up with you

Jonathan Schattke: we're ahead, no need to give them ideas on who can hit me. yeah, I see hicks went 1 and 1 with xxxx. I think xxxx being out of spec is going to cost them the battle.

Daniel Chung: We're giving back a lot to them. Def wins 2-9 in favor of phoenix

Michael Telladira: 48 point lead at half time I'll take. Win or lose we will make a good showing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1300 HOURS

Tiamat’s offensive had stalled by now. Our reserves were mostly depleted and were only able to launch sporadic attacks. Tensions were unmistakably high for we were waiting for Phoenix’s counteroffensive.

Michael Telladira: Chung! Who got 14th? They have 14 points now.

Daniel Chung: george warren lost to xxxx.

Michael Telladira: George! Whyyyyyy Possum buddy! Also xxxx is their 3rd strongest

Daniel Chung: defensive wins 2-10 in favor of phoenix

Michael Telladira: I got 2 I feel confident with left in tank. The rest are very very iffy

Daniel Chung: i'm confident enough to say none of them are iffy for me. i can't hit at all lmao

Lame attempt at humor. Nobody laughed in the comms channel.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1530 HOURS

Score was 68-19

Tiamat’s offensive had virtually stopped by now. By now Phoenix had launched probing attacks and gained a few more points. We were waiting for the coming storm. Cold calculating eyes were watching the info channels for every single movement.

Scott Abbott: Back to 50 point advantage

Michael Telladira: 49 now

Scott Abbott: Will you be up at midnight?

Michael Telladira: Oh yea. A fight like this, I wouldn't miss it

68-20

69 d win?

But then we noticed Phoenix companies were starting to make unnecessary mistakes. Was it a feint?

Daniel Chung: Def wins 10-6 now.

Michael Telladira: 70-24 d win probably yes! 10-7 :)

Scott Abbott: xxxx lost to sityou

Michael Telladira: Ok I think I can take him then. I'll wait on it obviously. For more intel

Daniel Chung: damn... xxxx went past my line like it was nothing. i feel so crushed :’(
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1800 HOURS

Sporadic attacks from Phoenix companies. Most of them breached our lines but the main offensive had yet to start. Would they ever start? The question began to form in our heads.

Daniel Chung: 6 hours left to end round. either they're really disciplined guys waiting to strike, or they just gave up

Scott Abbott: xxxx is attacking 950s

Michael Telladira: Holy fuck xxxx’s 950 beat my whole line up -__- sorry guys

Scott Abbott: Lmao

Michael Telladira: That's my bad, I thought my whole line up could take his 950. Sorry. A little disheartening to be honest lol

George Warren: it was a reasonable assumption on your part.

Daniel Chung: first time i see a sniping hit backfired 😃 the battle algorithm is seriously out of whack. in xxxx’s first win on me, he was firing almost nonstop, with very little return fire from me but in the second fight, it was like the other way round

Scott Abbott: Hit xxxx again

Bob Ostby: and i lost. how did i win 12 hours ago and lose now.

Such was how fickle minded RNG toyed with Tiamat Dragons, a win now, only to take it back with the next attack. The battle reports were seriously messed up.

Daniel Chung: rng is on meth this round. i see xxxx beat kenneth, then kenneth beat xxxx 99.999% of the time, if an opponent can beat you 2x that means you're weaker than him

Terry Harper: Yep 3 row swings in a couple of cases. Michael v xxxx, George v xxxx losses each way. xxxx just lost to Teaxe,he has given us 5 def wins now.

Daniel Chung: and he crushed teaxe earlier. rng is seriously fucked up this round

All through the day and into the evening, Tiamat Dragon companies were on the defensive, while Phoenix launched their assaults by 2 or 3 companies. Many a times Dragon lines were breached, but it was bloody and savage. By then defensive wins were 11-10 in favor of Dragons
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2300 HOURS

We were leading by 34 points. This was the crucial moment. Tiamat Dragons were on full alert. But most of us could only hold, for we had little to no reserves left.

Daniel Chung: score is 83-49 now with 1 hour left. if they're going to make a move, they must make it now

Jonathan Schattke: Looks like we're going to win this handily... xxxx is still showing 2200 tons... did everyone hit him twice?

Yes we did, or at least close to everyone did. But even for a dropped formation it fought stubbornly, gaining 2 defensive wins for Phoenix.

And at the end Tiamat lines held and never got broken. The high ground was held and never lost.

And thus, at the 2400 hour mark:

SCORE 87 – 54

Kenneth: gratz boys!!

Terry Harper: Thanks everyone, good outcome.

George Warren: very well done everybody!

It was unbelievable. Many of us just couldn’t believe it.

Joshua Bourne: Was a close fight. Holy shit, do my eyes deceive me? Did Tiamat REALLY Win D6??

But we did indeed. Both deserved to soar the skies proudly and majestically but only one was allowed. And thus, after a long and ruinous battle, the Phoenix was slain and the Dragon flew victorious. But it was a victory won with blood. The losses we took were more than 3 times round 1 and 2 COMBINED.

YET CLAN TIAMAT DRAGONS HELD THE GOLD IN ITS GRASP. WILL THERE BE ANY OPPOSITION TO CHALLENGE ITS MIGHT? WE SHALL SEE NEXT WAR. COME... WE SHALL WAIT FOR YOU.

CW3322 Post Event Interview With Don Davis #398405 By John Ringo #899287

Walking back to The Galaxy Gathering Offices after the Clan War after party I see a figure standing outside the door waiting for someone to let him in. Looks like this reporter just got lucky. I have Don Davis wanting a post event interview. I welcome him in and after we get settled in my office we get down to business.

GG: For the record what is your name, player ID, clan you fought with this last CW and what medal did you win?

Don: Don Davis #398405 - CLAN: Juggernaut - GOLD - That makes 2 for Juggernaut - 14 consecutive for our original Fusion members.

GG: Welcome Don and thanks for taking the time to talk to your friendly G.G. reporter. Now to the questions!

GG: Did your team perform like you expected this war?

Don: OH yes, LOL

Don: Everybody was right on point.  We ran coordinated attacks even when we didn't need to, just to stay sharp and because we can.  We formed this Clan with people who really know how to turn it on, so whether it's Kris or I calling shots, the precision they can bring to bear is a thing of beauty.

GG: Yes I bet that is exactly what goes through your foes mind before you kill him. Oh look how beautiful! *Wink*

GG: Was there anything you found to be a surprise this war?

Don: Well, very little surprises Kris and I.  We've been coordinating Clan Wars together since Clan Wars VII in 3272, however, we noticed last Clan War as well as this one that the RNG for multipliers and consecutive hits is now creating "last-rank turnarounds" that are often unpredictable.  This is something that Clan Leaders have to take into account.

GG: Sounds like the Craftsman have done some behind the scene changes.

GG: For those simple mech jockeys such as myself would you explain a little more about this change and how it could change the expected outcome of a fight?

Don: Well, some might argue it's "game engine" or just a shift in the RNG cycle, but it's neither here nor there.  It could just as easily be the introduction of new equipment and weapons creating a different dynamic that ripples out, but basically, it becomes more likely that David is going to beat Goliath a little more often now.  When you watch 5 mechs in the last rank take down 18+ 85 to 100-ton mechs in a row that are all "maxed out", for all practical purposes, on weapons and equipment, there's simply no explanation other than the fact that sometimes the multipliers are all going to align and a weaker element of a formation can pull off an upset.

Don: This is something that Clan Leaders and players have to get a handle on through testing - with the understanding that daily play and Clan War dynamics are not always the same.  In daily play, you might win with overwhelming force against a certain player, but in Clan Wars, it's still not a slam-dunk.  This is where Clan Leaders will need contingencies.

GG: Thanks for that Don. Pilots and Clan Leaders pay good attention to what was just said. Your next clan war victory might just depend on it.

GG: Was there anything you found to be a disappointment this war?

Don: Well, my raid winnings were about the worst I've ever seen, LOL - I've had better payouts from missions.

GG: Yes, I can understand that. I have had a few raids were all I got were the three 100% chance weapons.

GG: Are the Raid Prizes useful for your team or do you just sell most of it for needed Niodes?

Don: Very often the extra mech can come in handy for rainbows or whatever.  A lot of the crystal stuff gets cashed in.  Of course we'll keep relevant weapons and equipment, especially if they are limited/in-excess of our limits.

GG: Yes winning a weapon or equipment item that you can't buy any more due to shop limits is sweet.

GG: How hard was the Raid for your team?

Don: Well the Div 1 Raid always has a few hard spots, but it's rare that I encounter a formation I can't beat from 100%.  If I have an "open frame", it's usually on the back side of multiple attacks where I don't wait to heal.  We often let our lower-level folks take on most of what's left after the first kill cap.

GG: Yeah I can see how the tactics for XP gain in a D1 raid favor helping your little accounts catch up in level to your large accounts.

GG: This war every clan needed a 20T specialist to get in the game. Were pilots quick to volunteer for this in your clan or did you guys have to draw straws?

Don: For us that's a 100% Clan Leader decision, however, the choice was obvious.  We look at how strong everybody's main formation is relative to their 20T, and again relative to overall average Clan strength.  We also evaluate all that against the opposition.  We scout the enemy, so we know who has what specs, how strong they are and can pretty much predict what the opposing clan's picks will be.  We're also strong enough in our specs to compensate for that in the unlikely event the opposing Clan does something unexpected, but this is roster stuff, right?  There's nobody in the game who can find the magic and build winning rosters better than Kris Fleet.

Don: Of course, you've got to understand that this is Div 1.  A full brace of specs is pretty much prerequisite to be competitive in the top division.  I mean, if we as Div 1 players aren't ready to be the real deal, then we can't be surprised at getting beat, right?

GG: Well I know in D1 your clan comes loaded for bear in everything you all do. I also know there are lots of 80+ pilots who do not want to be bothered to set up and maintain all the needed specs for war. This kind of rule can hit those clans hard.

GG: What are your thoughts on the secret bonus prizes given out to the 20T guys this war?

Don: To tell you the truth, we don't play for prizes, so I really don't think very much at all, LOL.  I will say, however, that sometime back I actually came 5th place in the Daemonaide Div 1 KoTM with only 2 Fides, because I don't have any Daemons, LOL!  Sometimes even we have to throw something together and field it.  If you can arm and equip your mechs effectively, well, a running man can slice a hundred throats in a single night.

GG: Should Nick always give out bonus prizes when we have to have a specialist just to get in the war?

Don: I can't imagine why not.  Just from the outside looking in, it would seem that prizes and payouts could and should have been more significant and a larger percentage of the game economy from the beginning.  We've talked about the fact that even the mechs "pre-leveled to 40" don't provide the same "discount" or INCENTIVE to KEEP and LEVEL the mech to today’s >200 player that these things once offered the level 90-ish player.  It makes sense to evaluate the "spread" of player levels now and target payouts to those level-ranges that are the most active contributors to the overall game economy.  I mean, think about it; niodes only cost US money.  To the "game bank", it's "Monopoly money".  When the government injects a "stimulus" into the economy, there is a downside on the debt side of the ledger.  Within the game context, no such negative ledger even exists.  ANYTHING Nick does in this regard can ONLY have an overall POSITIVE effect on driving active gameplay.

Don: I mean, who is going to win 2000 niodes and then quit the game four days later?  Are you kidding me?

GG: Yeah if I had 2K niodes drop in my lap I would be bouncing around the room like one of the Bunnies after a 5 day drinking binge... Well I know Nick and the team read these interviews so maybe this will give them something to think about. Mr. Shapiro, if you need a test subject for a load of free niodes I humbly volunteer myself. *Smile*

GG: In your opinion, what does Nick and his team do very well in this game?

Don: Some might disagree, but actually the very kind of responsiveness you'd like to see to my previous comment, LOL!  Really, I've seen lots of games where you never even know who the game lead is, who the devs are, if anybody is listening AT ALL, etc.  The Player/Dev relationship in this game is actually better than most.  The other thing they do well is LEARN.  They've done things in the past that weren't great ideas, but the fact that they do listen and pay attention allows this kind of positive growth towards finding out what really works well.

GG: Yes staying in touch with the player base is very important if you want to grow your company so let us hope they never stop listening.

GG: In your opinion, what could Nick and his team do better in this game?

Don: Relate the game economy to the real-world economy in a more relevant way.  The competition in the game is important, but the player base has always been anemic in terms of supporting fully-competitive divisions.  I've always said that niodes should be a reward of actual gameplay.  We're starting to see it.  The mini-quests are a GREAT idea, and there should be more.  Of course, everybody wants "more", but my reasoning is that the player base has to grow from the bottom.  Nobody can come in and skip to level 150, so when they see the broad range of level disparity and wonder how they'll ever make it to Div 1 while *we* steadily level up and keep stretching it even further, there needs to be enough game payouts for them to be able to play, essentially for free through a good number of levels, now, in order to help scale player development to keep up with the level disparity - and drive competition - more effectively.  I mean, the alternative is that the top players ALL retire.  That would immediately compress competition, but it also immediately cuts the primary contributors in the profit column, right?  So there has to be a way to reimagine how rewards for successful gameplay should SCALE to support growing level disparity in a way that can still compress competition, attract new players and keep mid-level players from being literally disenfranchised in their development towards eventual Division 1 competition.

GG: Thanks for the very well thought out response. From your mouth to Nick's ears may it be so.

GG: Your clan used to be called Fusion. I am not sure everyone knows the story as to why that changed. Would you be willing to fill us in?

Don: Fusion was formed primarily by Gary Allsop, Kris Fleet and I.  A lot of what got it off the ground and the coup that put us on top from the jump was due to Gary's work behind the scenes, while Kris and I ran with the Clan Leader duties.  When Gary retired, Kris felt strongly that we should retire the Fusion name in his honor.  Meanwhile, Paul Copeland went MIA and we still miss him, too.  At this point, we're not really hung up on Clan names, but "Juggernaut" seems to be accurate if nothing else, LOL

GG: Yes it does feel like an appropriate name indeed. Gary has been missed in the community since he retired from the game so it was a nice thing for you to "Retire" the clan name in his honor.

GG: Before we wrap this up is there anything you would like to add?

Don: I'd just like to thank you for carrying the legacy of GG forward.  GG still holds the EXCLUSIVE for Clan Leader interviews with Juggernaut.

GG: Thanks for the kind words Don. I am just trying to do my part and keep G.G. alive as the voice of the player.

GG: It has been a pleasure talking with you and you are always welcome to stop by for an interview or press release. My best to you and your crew *Smile*

Don: Thanks a bunch!
