They gathered around the fire, hollow eyed and exhausted. Sweat pasted their hair to their heads, the stink of Hatoraide, blood, and fear was heavy in the air. They passed the horn, swilling bright honey mead, and beginning to decompress. This was sumbel, a holy rite of ancient times;this was debriefing and decompression, an after action necessity for professional warriors who have spent too much time under fire. They spoke of the funny things, the scary things, the close run battles, the things you just didn't admit bothered you, except at sumbel, where fire, friendship, and mead made it Ok. They talked about the war.
John T Mainer raised the horn in praise to the Battle-Glad. He could have raised it instead to the Victory Father, for they had known nothing but victory, but while victory was the goal, it was not the prize. The prize was the test, and only in battle could you face it.
Charles raised the horn, and praised the Avengers of Bunny, the junior division of the Defenders of Bunny had taken the field the first time this war, facing the Smurf Patrol, and the Death Hecklers. The Smurf Patrol were family; to win against them is to prove to your elder siblings you are worthy of respect. The Death Hecklers were an old enemy that crushed them in the past, with “campers” weight of metal and loot, against brash newcomers fighting spirit. This time, the Avengers lived up to their name, and Death was laughing at, rather than with the Hecklers.
Kyra raised the horn to Takeda 1st Wing, who fought with the mix of discipline and skill that earned them their long standing reputation. It was in desperate action against Takeda that Kyra won her greatest defensive victory, and to Takeda goes the credit for forcing her to rise to a new level of performance.
Melissa raised the horn and called out to 300 Wild Tigers, whose fury and skill caused each side to back off from the initial savage clash, circling and looking for a weakness the other never showed. The rousing cheer told everyone how much the end of that fight hung in question until night fell.
Bolverk got up, and took the horn. Raising it high, he praised Gusty and Andries, Ferbie and Little John. To all those who are new to our ranks, who were not with us in the Black Hills, where the Defenders of Bunny faced and fell to the Death Hecklers, who wielded mecha and weapons of power beyond their dreams. Now we stand a new Clan branch, with new blood. That new blood helped us earn our victory, erase the blot on our honour, and make us indeed the Avengers of Bunny!
Jessica took the horn and gave a saucy wink before draining half of it. She raised it high and offered a toast, to the Smurf Patrol, the only foe to dare to welcome us to the battlefield, to fight as hard on the field as they partied in garrison. To our little blue buddies, Smurf hard, you little blue lunatics. Never change.
John took the horn back and gazed into the fire a long time. Two of the fluffy bunnies hopped over and looked thoughtfully at the Bunny Chieftain. He looked from the fire, into the bunnies eyes and laughed.
“To the Death Curse AFF, and our friend Sean, who will give to the Defenders of Bunny the most precious gift of battle. To the 2nd Kearny Highlanders, who gave to us our first potato, and taught us the ways of Clan War once, and have returned to share it with us again.”
“Ladies and gentlemen, Bunnies all, I give you the field, the foe, and friends to face it with….HAIL!”
