The Test Chapter 9

Woody turns to Kalli, “We need to field test our Mechs. Can we use the arena?” “Yes … I’ll order the field test. All vid and visual ports will be shut down, “ Kalli replies. The boys enter their Mechs for the first time since the battle at the school. “Daddy’s home!” Woodman says to Road Runner as he powers her up. Woodman goes through each system, “All green here Coyote,” Woodman says over the com. “Ohhhh Yeaaahhh... Forgot about that call sign,” Woody laughs. “I’m all green too Road Runner. Let’s move out.” Woody says. The boys open the bay doors and move out on to the transport. Once the Mechs are secured they move to the arena via a system of tunnels. “WOW!!! This is cool,” Woodman says. “Yeah, very impressive,” Woody says. As the floor doors open, the Mechs begin their ascent to the arena. Moments later, a loud CLANG, then a CLICK. As the Mechs are released, Woodman is first to begin moving around. “I forgot how fluid she moves around. My best advice is don’t even think you’re in a Mech … Jut pretend you’re walking around.” Woodman says.

“Holy CRAP!!! This thing moves FAST!” Woody yells. After an hour or so of maneuvering around each on their own, they start putting movement patterns together and begin moving around together as a team. All of a sudden, they hear a loud BANG, then a CLICK. “Dude … Someone else is in here,” Woodman mutters. “Well, let’s see who it is,” Woody says. Just then, their training systems come on and activate. “Let’s use this chance to practice going up again unknown targets,” Woody says. “I’ll take point,” Woodman says. “K … let’s move.” Woody responds. He says, “Don’t use sensors. They’ll give our position away.” “Roger that,” Woodman replies. “Road Runner, take the high ground but keep cover.” “Roger Coyote.” As Woody takes position, he sees some branches move at the edge of the woods. “Road Runner … Be prepared to move fast and fire on my target. Edge of the woods, sector 3C. Lock targets NOW, and fire Big Bertha.” Woodman jumps just as a set of rockets land where he once was. Woody fires Shrieking Pain at a second target emerging from a large rock. “It’s the girls Coyote!” “Roger that.” But just then, Woody’s cockpit shakes hard. His left arm is gone. As Woody runs for cover, he sees what looked to be a Holmes out of his left eye. “Road Runner … there’s a third Mech … A Holmes. I lost my left arm.” “Holy CRAP!!! Get to a safe location and turn on sensors NOW Coyote!”

“Roger that Road Runner.” As their sensors come on, there are three targets left. One destroyed. As Woody looks at his panel, One Holmes: destroyed. One Warhorse: damaged. One Warhorse: no damage. One Holmes: no damage. “Road Runner! … Shut sensors and targeting systems down. Let’s go dark.” “Roger Coyote. Use Delta Six … drop back and fly.” “Roger Road Runner.” Both boys’ Mechs move out to a full on sprint. All of a sudden, shells and laser beams start flying everywhere. “They’re in pursuit Coyote.” “Roger.” As the boys move around a large formation of rocks, Road Runner swivels around and cups his hands together. Coyote places a foot into Road Runners hands as Road Runner launches Coyote. Coyote in turn pushes off at the same time, sending him up and over the formation and on to the top. At the same moment, Road Runner continues to run full out. Just as he gets behind some cover, two Mechs comes charging around the corner, guns blazing. Road Runner returns fire. The two Mechs quickly stop and take cover behind the formation. Coyote quickly moves in from above on the rock formation. He simultaneously fires at both Mechs as he jumps down and hugs the dirt. Just as he hits the dirt, a Holmes fires a volley of projectiles but misses, and hits the two Warhorses. Just then, two lasers go streaking over Coyote as he sees Road Runner leaping over him and firing at the Holmes.

Coyote quickly gets up and joins in the attack. The Holmes is caught out in the open and the two faster Hoplites move quickly around the Holmes at close range and take it apart. A loud horn sounds and all weapon systems are shut down. All Mechs are able to move and coms are open once again. A gruff voice says, “Nice job guys – I’m impressed.” says Commander Blade as he leaves the field. “Wow guys! That was AWESOME!!! You have to teach us some moves!” Kalli yells as they follow the Commander. The boys look at each other and give a high five. “Let’s go clean up the Mechs and give them a once over. They worked hard today,” Coyote says to Road Runner. Once the boys are back in their hanger, and they’re finished with their last minute maintenance and adjustments, Woody says, “Man, I’m beat. We need to get some sleep.” Woodman agrees and they pack it up for the night.

The Agreement Chapter 8

The boys wake to a thunderous BANG!!! And the sound of gears turning. “What the HELL is that???” Woody shouts. “Sounds like our hanger door opening,” Woodman replies . The boys scramble and get themselves up. “HEY! … What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Woody yells down to two pilots. “We have orders to give these two Mechs a full maintenance check and later, outfit them with their payloads.” one of the pilots replies. “NO ONE touches these Mechs but US … now leave!” Woodman shouts back. The boys quickly run down he stairs to confront them. “No problem …. We’re just following orders sirs,” the pilots say as they quickly leave. Woody hits the button to close the hanger doors. Woodman quickly looks around and yells out, “We’re ok … no one else is here bud.” Before they have a chance to do anything, they hear a buzz from the door. “NOW what?” Woody says as they head towards the entrance. As Woodman cautiously opens the door, their manager barges in with breakfast. “Hi there boys … Come sit down and eat. No work for you today,” Gabe says with a smile.

He quickly moves up to their office and sits the food down on each of their desks. The boys quickly follow behind then take their seats. “Wow! This is amazing boys. You don’t have any idea. I’ve been up all night negotiating with everyone. Well … mainly Clan Song. The Mongole Beast tribe won’t negotiate – Their terms are final,” Gabe says. “Who?...What tribe?” Woody asks. Gabe continues, “I’ll explain everything the best I can. Toobar and Makar are the princes of their tribe. They have twenty warriors and Clan Song was in negotiations with them to officially sign them on as merchs. As it stands now, they have no official affiliations. Up to this point, the tribe has only been able to attack non-clan outfits, which is not very profitable. But, with the two princes joining Clan Song, they would enjoy the protection and the ability to join in clan raids - This would be very profitable for the tribe and allow them to expand. Now that you two have taken the two spots that they had hoped were theirs, they feel you two cheated them, hence the challenge. Now the interesting part is they have challenged you both to the death – Winner takes all. That means if they kill you, they would get all of your belongings and wealth and in addition, assume your positions at Clan Song with your contracts. But, on the flip side, if you kill them both, you two become the princes and heirs to the throne of the tribe.

That entitles you to get shares in all their raids, present and future. You don’t even have to take part in the raids. All warriors must pay tribute to you both. But where Song comes in … If you win, they don’t have to deal with their tribal ways. They can deal with you instead. Song gains a merch unit for very little or no cost to them. So, it is a win win all around. Just don’t get killed. The battle is set for tomorrow afternoon. Everything is set. The battle will be here at your arena. Song is flipping the bill as long as you agree to their terms. Do you boys understand?” Gabe asks. “So, if we win, we become princes and will receive money from the tribe and Song will pay for all our upgrades and weapons?” Woody asks. “Yep!” Gabe answers. “Just sign here and here to accept and I’ll let all parties know right away.” Woodman pipes up, “I’m in. We can do this bud.” “Ohhh…ok.” Woody says as the boys both sign the agreement. You boys better get your Mechs ready. There’s a gentleman outside that will take your order for weapons and gear and your clan is off today, so let them help you – Try to check out the battle field.” Gabe says as he rushes out of the hanger. Just then the boys hear familiar voices. “Hey guys … What have you done?” Kalli yells.

The boys hug the girls as they jump into their arms. After a moment of embraces the girls ask, “Why did you agree to this? It’s INSANE! The Mongole Beast tribe are the most feared tribe on the planet. They are brutal. They don’t believe in second best. You either win or die. “ “Don’t worry girls, we’ll be just fine.” Woodman says. “We could use your help getting our Mechs ready and we need to check out the arena.” Woody says. “Excuse me … but if you’re going to order anything you’ll have to do it soon.’ the parts rep says as he clears his throat. “Oh yeah… We need two TETRUS BETA shields and two of every weapon system you have available for a Hoplite,” Woodman states. “It’ll be here in about an hour sirs. Good luck to you both,” the rep smiles as he leaves. “Girls, take us to the arena,” Woody says. The four of them make their way to the arena and start looking around and taking notes. After the girls give the boys a tour and a map, they head back to work on their Mechs. By mid afternoon both Mechs are ready.

The Challenge Chapter 7

An alarm clock sounds and then, the thump of a hand coming down hard – The alarm is silenced. “Just five more minutes…”, Woodman mumbles. “C’mon … We don’t want to be late,” Woody says. The boys rush to get ready and out to their E.B. “That was quite the night,” Woodman says as they pull away from their hanger. “Yeah … You guys were all pretty loaded,” Woody replies. “Sorry man. Guess we should have decided who was going to be the DD before we left,” Woodman smirks. “No problem bud – I don’t drink much,” Woody says as they arrive to work. The boys quickly make their way down the hall and punch in. As the move to join the crew in line, they realize the girls aren’t there yet.

It’s 7:58am and Woody notices two of the older crew members exchanging something. One of them says ‘Pay up bud.’ Just then they hear a click and some frantic panting coming from the hall. It’s the girls. Just as they move into the line the work horn goes off. After the morning greeting from the Commander, the crews are off to their work stations. “Hey girls … Glad you made it. How are you two feeling?” Woody asks. “Rough morning and we’ve got wicked hangovers. Let’s just try to make it through the day so we can get some sleep,” Kalli replies after giving out the workloads. Woody’s really glad that all they have today is general maintenance. The hours drag on and as the work day comes to an end, the horn sounds and the girls walk with the boys out to the E.Bs. Kalli finally breaks the silence. “Thanks guys … we had a great time last night but we’re just heading home to catch up on some sleep. We’ll talk soon ok?” she says as they drive off. As Woody gets into his E.B, he looks around for Woodman.

He laughs as he spies him sleeping in the backseat. ‘WOW…what a day. At least it’s over.’ Woody thinks to himself as he drives back to their hanger. As he pulls up, he notices a pilot standing at their door. Woody parks and as he gets out of the vehicle he yells, “Wake up Woodman!” “What?...What!? … ok ok, I’m awake.” Woodman replies groggily. He shakes his head trying to fully come back to reality. Woody walks up to the pilot, “Can I help you ?” he asks. “Why yes. Are you Woody and Woodman of Clan Song?” the pilot asks. “Yes … what’s this all about?” Woody questions. “Just sign here for the parcel,” the pilot continues. Woody signs for it – ‘Must be a Mech part.’ He thinks as the pilot drives off. Woody and Woodman look at each other. “You’ve gotta be kidding me!” Woody says. “Let’s go in and check it out,” Woodman offers. The boys sit on the couch and open the envelope. Woody starts reading aloud:

To the thieves Woody and Woodman:

I, Toobar and my brother Makar, challenge you - A combat to the death. This includes your positions in Clan Song. We were promised these positions and have been waiting two years – We WILL NOT be insulted by you stealing our positions. To prove to Clan Song that we are the best, we will destroy you and take what is rightfully ours. Since we are the challengers, you may choose your field of battle. You cannot refuse as we have made this challenge public though the net. We look forward to facing you. You have one day to reply.

“What the hell?...” Woody says. “Wow … That was fast. Only our second day and someone wants us dead. This is serious.” Woodman replies. “What are we going to do? … My Mech isn’t even together yet.” Woody mumbles as he scratches his head. “We should be able to get it back together tonight,” Woodman says. “In the meantime, lets order in some food and get to it - Can’t think on an empty stomach now can we?” Once the food arrives, the boys quickly get to work and by the time they’ re finished it’s well after midnight. “Well, let’s call it a night. At least the Mechs are all together,” Woody says. Woodman pipes up, “Yeah, tomorrow we need to see our manager and the Commander.” “Yeah … but we REALLY need some sleep. I’m heading to bed. See you in the morning,” Woody says with a yawn. No sooner than their heads hit the pillow they’re both fast asleep.

Flavian Spear Weapon Review

This laser has a minimum level of 45 to purchase. It will cost you 600 ferrite, 360 Bioptics, and 40 Niodes. Bulk buy of 5 for 160 Niodes with no limit. It does a damage od 70 with a speed of 100, and packs the ability of Crit-Kill of 15%.

A handy laser system with decent damage attached to it along with the crit-kill ability. It is sold with mechs such as the Regis, and Torrent, which are higher end mechs so obviously this weapon comes held in high regard. Good pricing, good damage, decent ability, really not a weapon to pass out for filling out your laser arsenal.

Lizard Brain Weapon Review

this Niode fire weapon is for minimum levels of 67. It will cost you  1,650 Ferrite, 1,000 Bioptics, 53 Niodes and sells in bulk five for 212 Niodes. It has a limit of 60, a damage of 95, and a speed of 104. The abilities of this weapon are Burn of 35%, and a splash of 8%.

It goes without saying this is a perfect little pyromaniac weapon for every form of flame tossing mech out there. A solid damage base, good speed and a high burn percentage makes this one little hot item to handle. As with most abilities it can be augmented to a degree with proper equipment load outs, and build on a mech. Perfect for Infernos, Gigas, Ignis, Cindron and every other mech down the line either as primary weaponry or a nasty little surprise on a mech you just wouldn't expect it on.

Khron Weapon Review

A niode ice weapon for minimum level 89. It will cost you 1,800 Ferrite, 1,300 Bioptics, and 57 Niodes. Or buy in bulk 5 for 228 niodes with a limit of 45. It deals out a punishing 115 damage with a speed of 99, and has the abilities of Freeze at 40% as well as Slow (7).

A great addition to your ice arsenal and perfect for every ice throwing mech no matter the tonnage. Of course with right mech build and equipment this weapon becomes almost unbeatable for freezing the enemy whenever it fires. Slow always comes in handy when facing a faster opponent as every shot gums up the opponents servos with ice and slows down their movement. A little on the pricey side but if you want power you do have to pay for it in one way or another.

The Thought Box

While setting up Jabberwocky in her new home within the Regis mech we came across a data vault of Forerunner designs and weaponry. Within these designs was the detailed explanation for construction of what was referred to as a “Thought Box”. This device was used as a pilot brain within a mech with an already living consciousness such as the Jadoon, or any of the beast mecha, so that the pilot could be in another mech of his choosing yet still operate these other mecha as if he were piloting those himself. It was more reliable than an A.L.T., and better than a clone as you did not have to deal with the devious Dr. Drake, or risk degradation of your own thought process to make one. Smarter than a basic combat drone, able to adapt to combat situations, and integrated with the pilots own combat experience it seemed ideal.

The construction of the box itself was rather intricate and not without its hazards though. It involved crafting a crystalline cube with nano niode circuitry using Vanadium connectors to house the box within the given mecha and attach it properly. The danger was in attuning the box to the pilot in question. That required a D.N.A. sample to be placed in the center of the box. Once properly affixed, the pilot had to interface with the box much like we do with our normal mecha, and basically download ones self into the D.N.A. sample. From there the sample would grow to a miniature brain within the box and act as a normal human pilot to interface with the mech in question. The danger was in the download, if done incorrectly the pilot would be absorbed into the box, which would leave his actual physical body a mere shell, and his consciousness lost within the machine he just created.

The box once properly constructed would be no bigger than a standard jewelry box, but would cost a great deal to construct and a few months’ time to properly complete. I of course decided this would be ideal to try and scrapped a few old mechs I had in the hanger for parts and credits to purchase what I did not have. All in all it cost me a fully outfitted Frigis mech from my hanger, a Bishop, an old Keradon, and a Fides.  Nothing I couldn’t live without, really but a heavy price to pay in resources for a science experiment.

Using the downloaded schematics I painstakingly copied the designs and instructions for the device to my own personal files, and committed the entire process to memory. The crystal/niode interface was very delicate and the slightest error could render the whole process worthless before you even got started. I eventually felt confident in my memorization and began working on construction of the box. I hooked Wocky into the Brotherhoods science lab for supervision and assistance on this endeavor. She of course gave me grief as she wanted to stay and enjoy her new Regis body, but eventually I convinced her it would only be for a limited time, and that she could go right back to her new form once all was completed.

I used the refined crystal to create the shell of the box and had to be very careful with the construction. Too much at once could lead to stress fractures that would cause neural feedback through bio-electric means once the D.N.A. was inserted. I had to expose the crystal to immense heat and pressure within the labs super-heated crucible, usually reserved for stress tests on new mechs. Eventually the box body began to come together properly. There were few scares when the crucible regulators almost shut off due to constant running but I was able to override them and get everything back on track before any damage was done.

The nano niode circuitry I left to Wocky who used the labs automated assembly and processing station to create the intricate web to exacting standards, and install properly within the crystalline body of the box. The D.N.A. sample was achieved through a simple trip to the med lab and obtaining some of my own bone marrow, blood, and tissue samples. I then took those and placed them in the desired pattern in the box.  Exposure to radiation, and high voltage electric current came next to fuse these samples together in the right order with the circuitry, so that they could act as a surrogate nervous system for the organic material once it was reformed into a surrogate brain. I had to let the genetic concoction “cook” for a couple of days under the watchful care of Wocky while I mentally prepared myself for the most crucial part of the process, the initial interface, and download.

Things were finally about ready as they would ever be as the entire process from start to download took a little over a month. The next part of the process if done right would take almost the same time again to complete. I had myself strapped in to a preservation chamber to ensure my body would not dehydrate, or become malnourished while my mind was busy playing within this new construction. Again under the careful supervision of Wocky I started the interface and prayed to my stars that I would awaken again safe and sound in my own body.

This part of the process was best likened to intense meditation. I was adrift in my own mental landscape, tossed about between my innermost hopes and dreams like a piece of wood caught up on the tides. Eventually I was able to mentally pull myself together to recognize that I was no longer in my body. My consciousness had made transference to the box, now all I had to do was properly input it with the desired information and get back to my body. What I had not counted on was meeting myself in there.

“Who are you? Better yet who am I?” The other me asked of myself in slow almost mumbled, halting speech.

“You are me, I am you.” I replied, granted I have always been kind of a smart ass so messing with myself was almost impossible to pass up here.

Apparently this was the wrong answer though as the thought form version of me let loose with a wretched howl, and advanced menacingly towards me. I was frozen for a brief second then remembered the schematics had detailed this portion of the process. I was facing myself in a mental no mans land. I had to gain the upper hand and make me recognize myself as the superior consciousness. Once that was achieved I could then meld it with the real me, impart the knowledge of what I wished, and finally get back to my own body.

So the real me attacked the thought form me and a battle of wills began. Granted in the minds eye it looked like knockdown street brawl, but in reality it was a simple battle of wills against my genetic material seeking its own identity. We fought, punched, scratched, kicked and bit at each other reduced to our primal essence in this weird place. Each hit doing little to no damage to the other, with no maneuver the other did not know how to counter. It was mentally exhausting to say the least, eventually I got an idea.

I simply stopped fighting. I let the other me get in close and throw a punch, I fought the urge to block, suppressed the instinct to fight back and simply let it happen. In here this was just a pale copy of me, I was the one with intelligence, and this simulacrum was all instinct and animal savagery. The only way to subdue it was to absorb it. Once I realized that the rest was simple. I just absorbed the other version of myself, instructed it on what I wanted it to do, shared my memories and combat experience with it, and expelled it when I was done.

It vanished upon leaving my form and the mental landscape around me dissolved.  Eventually I was able to open my physical eyes once again. Upon awakening Wocky had to explain to me that part of the process had taken almost a whole month yet again. It took me a bit to get back on my feet as even the preservation chamber could only do so much. I was weak and needed rest. While I was gone however Wocky had constructed the interfacing tool from the Vanadium with which the box would be used to interface with the mech in question.

Finally after about two and a half months the work was completed. It had its ups and downs a few very scary points to it but I had made my own thought box at last. Installing it and integrating it with my Jadoon would be the easy part after all of that. So with cheerful thanks I let Wocky get back to her Regis mech, and set off to install the new piece of equipment on Apocalytor. Hmm maybe I could build another one in the future I do have that Nakshi I acquired after all.

*Notation - Thought boxes may only be used by  mecha with a living consciousness, they require a form of life force generated by such beings to thrive. They may not be installed in a basic mech as there is no living consciousness to piggy back off of. Battle A.I., clones, and A.L.T.S are for these purposes. If a thought box is installed in one of these non living mechs it will quickly deteriorate and die, in the process it will flash fry the basic interface the pilot uses to control said mech.

Cornerian Ion Weapon Review

This crystal laser system is for levels 15 and above. It will run you 225 Ferrite, 180 Bioptics, and 4 Crystal. It does 15 Damage, with a speed of 100, and packs the ability of Slow (3). Or by a bulk shipment of 5 for 16 Crystals with no limit. One of your basic lesser lasers but easily affordable and good for a back up weapon in a pinch if you are approaching mid levels.

Otherwise for lower level players this is a quick, easy, affordable weapon system. It comes pre equipped on a few lower tonnage mechs as a starter weapon. The slow ability is always a bonus to have to your weapons so as a starter laser this has a bit of an edge on other crystal weapons around the same level. Basic speed on this for a laser and honestly again not too bad. This can be augmented damage wise by stat allocation, equipment choices or mech build.

Cherenkov Ray Weapon Review

A niode laser that has a minimum level of 90 to it, and will cost 1,900 Ferrite, 1,900 Bioptics, and 57 niodes. Or the bulk option to buy 5 for 228 niodes with a limit of 45. It has a damage of 115, and a speed of 102, with the ability of crit-kill at 19%.

Again a weapon for the big boys and girls with an ability that can be augmented by equipment, but even at that the straight up 115 damage is nothing really to scoff at. The speed of 102 makes it faster than you standard crystal lasers, which is perfect for your higher end laser based mechs like the Regis, or stick it on smaller tonnage mechs for a surprise in the low tonnage tourneys. This little beauty has been specifically designed for shutting down an enemy mechs subsystems, with the stats it has that is hard to argue against.

Res Laser Weapon Review

This is a crystal laser weapon that you have to be a minimum level of 61 to obtain from the shop. It costs 1,650 Ferrite, 1,000 Bioptics, and 55 Crystal to buy, or get the five pack bulk option for 220 crystal, with a limit of 80 total. This laser has a simple X2 Damage at 4% ability attached to it, and deals 52 Damage straight up with a speed of 100.

Not a bad laser system, often used to outfit mechs like the Bishop or Sever. The X2 ability of course comes in handy and can be augmented by proper equipment as well as mech build stats that increase as you level up. The speed is pretty basic for a laser weapon, with the niode lasers usually being faster this is pretty standard. Overall a good, solid, reliable weapon that can be used across many mech builds to suit your individual needs as a pilot.
