Radium Engine Review by David McCallum #701548

The first comment I heard when these were released was “Zadok’s just got a whole lot tougher…”

It’s a very accurate summation, and on a whole lot of levels it sums up the fact that this is a very nice and useful bit of gear.

With a list price of 256 ferrite, 205 Bioptics and 14 Niodes you get speed of 20 and a straight armour pack of 10. The really impressive thing that stands out is that for the higher end of its usage range, you loose none of the speed of the standard Wankel engine and only the ultra light block engines go faster.

The fact that this armour boost is coming in at levels where armour slots are at a premium on mechs and you are only enhancing them rather than swapping out means that you are getting almost the same armour value as a Beta grade shield with none of the vulnerabilities, and the cost is comparable.

It may not be much, but finally the Holmes class gets some shielding, the Orcus gets really bullet proof and the Axebot gets the most benefit of all in terms of protection from this system although it has to relinquish some speed to do it.

So for an up and coming pilot where the weapons are not as powerful as they are at high level, this addition is going to keep you in the battle for just a few more shots to get your win.

And the beauty is that for high level players who only bring the little guys out in specialist wars, the price is such that its almost loose change; If you don’t have enough niodes for a system for the big boys, this is a worthwhile investment to use up the leftovers.
