The Ethereal Universe: Plimpton's Cosmic Turtle by Nathan Justin Weiser #817890

Hello and Welcome, to the first edition of a new series in which we wish to look in on the natural world of our Galaxy. I am Nathan Weiser and I will be your guide to this mysterious and wondrous world that is often overlooked in our world of extreme industry, super science and harsh warfare. For out first edition, I thought we could look in on one of the most massive and beautiful creatures that has survived millenia of change completely unchanged, Plimpton's Cosmic Turtle.

Discovered by Zendor Plimpton in the year 3029, this creature glides slowly through the depths of space consuming resources mostly from uninhabited asteroids, but sometimes also filter feeding on galactic dust clouds. This journey is, for the turtle, one that we all yearn for at a base level, and that is to mate. It appears that the turtle, through some unknown sense, is able to find trace evidence of the travels of other turtles. The whole of the observed race appear to be hermaphroditic. This is likely due to the slight chance of encounters between the creatures, allowing for procreation under any circumstances.

As noted, these creatures are massive in size, reaching lengths of nearly 10 miles. Though these resemble the turtles of old Earth, it is in name only as they share traits with many kingdoms. This includes their proclivity for live birth, usually of just one offspring. Interestingly, there is a large difference in the birth size of these creatures and their full adult size, though the children are often still 100 yards or more in length. Tracking from the beginning of one of their lives to current day has yet to find a Cosmic Turtle reaching it's full adult size, suggesting that these creatures are extremely long lived, possibly multiple millennia.

On a more serious note, poaching of these creatures have grown more and more detrimental as warfare technology has increased exponentially. In an effort to protect these beautiful animals, a galaxy wide treaty has been put in place that creates an organization dedicated to protecting their way of life. They operate by following these creatures at a safe distance as to not disturb their habits, yet still close enough to defend against attacks by pirates and poachers.

That is all for today, I hope that you have enjoyed this foray into The Ethereal Universe. For Galaxy Gathering news network, this is Nathan Weiser. Thank you and goodnight.

The Pilot By Brian Vaughan #56278

Part 1

The distinctive sound of atmospheric entry thundered throughout the drop-ship as the pilot worked through the task of pre-combat checks. Outside his cockpit he could hear the roar of the hull plummeting closer to the surface of the planet below. Crackles, thuds and whines permeated even into the insulated hull of his dreadnought class mecha. Viewed from outside it was an eerie site as the various ships plummeted down. Their hulls still glowing red from the initial atmospheric entry they billowed smoke and flaming shards of heat shields that, having served their purpose, had come dislodged.

Inside the cockpit the pilot went through the checklist with proficient ease. He had, after all, been training the better part of his life for this. Gyroscopic stabilization...check. Targeting and damage computers...check. Generators and life support systems...check. It all seemed too routine in someways but then again, despite training, this was only the second battle for him. He pondered the surface below. He had heard stories of the planet and seen photos, but those where almost ancient memories as their exact age and locations where unknown. The planet had been steeped in war for generations now and could look very different, perhaps a barren rock, scarred and charred.

The muses of his mind where shattered by the sound of retro-thrusters firing. They were nearing the disembarkation point. The gravity seemed to triple as the rockets flared increasingly violently. This would not be an easy drop as the enemy was near and aware of their arrival. Sounds of enemy fire began to hammer the hulls of the drop-ships as the long range bombardments began. Huge shells slammed into the ships exploding in brilliant flashes as metal shrapnel blossomed from the impact points. It would take more than that though. The drop-ships where literally spherical tanks armed with layers of plated alloys, heat dampening materials and radiation shielding. They were meant for one purpose and that was to get the mechs to the ground.

The ships where a few hundred meters from the ground, their decent slowing, as the medium and short range batteries opened up. These would be a little more effective as they were comprised of heavy laser cannons, and ionized particle guns. The beams began to cut into the hulls of the massive ships and a rain of molten metal began to fall as the beams cut deeper. The lowest ship suddenly leered to one side as the lasers found a weak point near one of the main thrusters. It exploded with a deafening concussion and a massive fireball erupted from inside. The secondary explosions of other systems inside, as well as fully armed mechs, began to rip the hull apart and it now began a fall rather than a decent, listing to one side the fate of the ship and those inside was sealed. A few seconds later and the entire ship slammed into the ground creating an enormous crater and crumpled in a series of explosive detonations.

For the rest of the drop-ships, the last moments of the decent were a flurry of activity as their own cannons opened fire. These were formidable and decisive weapons, but limited in their rounds and saved for the deployment phase, which was the most vulnerable for their precious cargo of mechs. The thunderous claps of the massive cannons sounded in unison as the barrages quickly eliminated many of the enemy cannon positions. Simultaneously, huge bay doors opened with surprising speed for their size utilizing the gravity for increased speed. Mechs began jumping out using their jets where fitted or being lowered on cable lines. They hit the ground at near critical impact and the pilots inside would feel the effects long after the battle was over.

Light and medium mechs raced quickly from the ships fanning out to avoid gunfire and form offensive perimeters, doing their best to hold off the quickly approaching enemy mechs until the larger mechs could get down and moving. These massive sized larger mechs were death on legs and their visage was impressive to anyone new to the spectacle. Huge shoulder mounted cannons, missile racks and other delivery systems coupled with the vast array of secondary and tertiary weaponry. Painted to depict animals of renown ferocity from the past and present. Lightning bolts, flames, and the kill marks from past battles adorning their scarred metal armor that had been fitted and refitted sometimes with bizarre patterns.

The ground assault commenced and batteries from turrets and drop-ships subsided almost in unison. Rounds would not be wasted by either side for that component of the battle as it was now a moot point. The walking machines would now determine this battle. The drop ships began their ascents having finished unloading their cargo. Those that could return had already ignited their thrusters and were lifting off, their immense plumes of fire kicking up dust from the ground providing much needed cover for the assaulting mechs as they formed up and began to press the attack.

The pilot had a quick glimpse of the terrain, just before the cloud had enveloped him. It was the first time in his life to glimpse this world. Despite the immediate damage of the occurring battle the landscape was a diverse mixture of green trees, grassy plains and hills and in the near distance a lake glistened with a crystal blue clarity unlike anything he had seen in his life. So the pictures had been accurate and he hoped they would remain accurate after this war ended. The moment disappeared in the cloud of dust and smoke and he reverted his gaze to the navigational and tactical monitors.

His was the secondary assault formation whose objective was to flank the left of the main assault force. En route to the target objective his formation was to provide cover fire, to mop up enemy flanking units and to secure the north corridor, which surveillance had shown to be a geological landscape that could be used by the enemy to funnel a surprise attack force through. It was basically a large canyon formation similar in size and scope to the grand canyon of ancient Terra, but far older and therefor not as steep in its sides, but still a massive feature. Any mechs approaching through this terrain would be invisible to surface scans. This made the objective of crucial importance and the pilot felt a sense of pride to be assigned to the detail.

The formations had aligned in their positions and despite the shortages from the landing 95% of the mechs had survived and now began to emerge from the dust. Medium mech's moved out quicker but behind them appearing slowly the shadowy forms of the assault class mecha dwarfed them as they thudded across the ground. Gigus, Ignis, Magnus and Boreas classes presented themselves in a wide array of arrangements, each with objectives preset during the assault planning. Their leg apparatus made the ground shake with each step as their metallic bodies jerked mechanically and the sounds of hydraulic pistons and massive gearing squeaked and ground in a menacing chorus only machines of war produce.

The enemy mechs closed in to meet them and volleys of gunfire sparked across the landscape as rounds found their marks and mecha began to take damage on both sides. A scouting Anzu exploded from a well placed heavy cannon round. The round itself was almost half the size of the Anzu and as it stuck, the small mecha was shattered into a thousand parts and the momentum of the round flung it back several meters. When it landed it was a chassis with a huge hole in it with two legs attached. It would have been comical if not for the reality of the moment.

The casualties mounted on both sides as the initial encounter unfolded. Explosions where now happening with rapid intensity as the battle unveiled and armor was worn away opening the machines inner and more susceptible systems. Generators where the most fantastic detonations, their energy was like a small nuclear reaction going off when struck by any energy based weapons. They left nothing of their shells intact. Bright orange, blue and yellow flames arced from every seem in the doomed mech as it exploded. Ammo stores where next as they often shot off in multiple directions as their rounds took any path to escape without a barrel to control their trajectory. In extreme cases, a nearby mech would fall victim as well being torn apart by the exploding ordinances if they were too close.

In other cases, the mechs would lose a leg or more and crumple over. Those where the pilots that had a very bad day. At least an exploding power core or ammo store was typically a quick and instantaneous death. A fallen mech pilot had the task of first escaping the mech before it was finished off and then, if that was successful, they had to find a way to get away from the machine and find a place to hide. A battlefield of this magnitude was no place for a human. The shrapnel that came off the machines although not very detrimental to the metal skins of mecha, was more than enough to crush, mangle or decapitate a human's body. Not to mention the vast array of flammable, freezing and acidic chemicals utilized in modern warfare. Probably the worst thing was the fact that some “less civilized” pilots took great joy in crushing wayward humans beneath their mechs feet.

The pilot pushed forward on the throttle and his great machine began to take increasingly quicker strides as forward momentum was achieved. His targeting computer lit up with a series of strike coordinates of the enemy. It was the pilots training and instinct that would determine which to hit first. He pulled the stick into position flipped the safety and pulled the trigger... (to be continued).

Where Are They Now Galaxy Gathering Gossip Edition By Pat Willis#224534

Ever wonder what happens to he big bad master minds of the raids once they are beaten back...yet again? Presumably they simply go into hiding to scheme and rebuild their armies until they are ready to try again. Or are they attached to different dimensions like the Negaverse but can only maintain themselves for a limited time here in our version of reality?

One of  G.G. paid informants said he saw one of the Gorak style mecha heads used as a Alcho blend dispenser at the outer territories chew and spew. Supposedly the weapon arms are being used to plasma sear the meats on the grill, engines were re-purposed for power, and the chassis was overhauled to make the rest stop itself. Our informant sent back word that an oddly insect like being with multiple appendages was behind the grill, and would indeed answer to the name Gorak.

When asked for a comment on the failed raid he presumably lead, and his plans for the future he calmly and coldly replied, "I'll be back to gutter bang all your mecha pilot skull holes like a pervert in a pinata factory!" We're not exactly sure what that means, but we can hazard a guess and , well just eww!

Roklar Connectors Equipment Review by David McCallum #701548

WHAT

WERE

THEY

THINKING!?!?!

A brand new chassis piece for the super heavy class, and it can be purchased in any colour as long as its surgical pink!

Why in all the galaxy would I want to dress my brand new Typhoon up in what, to all intents and purposes, looks like my Grannies corset???

A dodge rating of 10? I'm not surprised... no self respecting targeting system would want to look at it!!

Splash shielding rated at 35% and a flat shield value of 7. I'm frankly amazed its not higher... missiles will be self detonating short of the target and smart munitions will swerve to go in the opposite direction, as any sentient thing should when confronted with octogenarian undergarments!

Looks, styling and the complete disregard for them aside however, this isn't a bad piece costing only 51 Niodes, 1155 Bioptics and 1634 Ferrite for a system that enhances the BFM class while giving no penalties performance wise.

And on the plus side, while you are in the cockpit, you don't have to have any direct sight of the fact that your mech now looks like it just failed an audition for Betty White's Moulin Rouge Dance Troupe...

Just don't expect your maintenance crew to keep you on their Christmas

card list.... they actually have to touch it... eww!!!

1. INTRODUCTION/HISTORY:

Released during June of 3306, a couple months after a Clan War Tournement and the arise of a new Drohchas’ assault of the League of Ages, this bizarre cannon bests the top ten of the projectile pain makers among all the ballistic crystal based weaponry.

The manufacturer’s motto advertisement was spread all along the wide and far Galaxy Netlink Channels: “Even the biggest challengers are going to get leveled by the Leveler”

This is the promise, and for certain, this massive gun is not available for everyone but the most experienced pilots above all the elite mech warriors of the Galaxy.

Let’s the technical analysis start then.

The elite pilots will love to replace the old guns on their backup Antithesis and Dreadnoughts, loading this trusty gun and making a real improvement in your units.

. . .

4. DESCRIPTION:

There is not much imagination in the design, but pure killing purpose and effectively firing deploy: By shooting with the leveler, your enemy won’t be see nothing else but a pure ferrite rain dropping above their armored carapace.

Above a rough cannon cylinder an upper structure will work as both, autoloader and cooling system to keep the cannon melting after a massive barrage.

The design was meant to allow the mech opening fire even in underwater environments.

The projectiles uses a head of enriched uranium covered by an advanced durilium-ferrite alloy, designed to protect the own projectile from enemy countermeasures and to pierce the stronger shield.

Leadership by Estrella Starfire #907130

The greatest mistake in military organization is the thought that a great warrior makes a great leader. This assumption can make for devastating results. Therefore as a clan it is imperative to consider exactly which qualities your leader should have.

Having served in a variety of leadership positions I have found that sometimes leadership must be learned through a painful process. To assume leaders are natural is a mistake. to assume everyone has leadership potential is also a mistake. So in that choosing your leaders you should think about your people and what they need to achieve their full potential. Do they need discipline, do they need positive reinforcement or do they need example. Perhaps in the end they need all.

An effective leader should certainly be able to lead by example. An effective leader can expect nothing more from his/her people then he expects from himself/ herself. You cannot expect your troops to go forth into battle if you are not willing to go your self. You cannot expect your troops to be team players if you are not a team player. An effective leader is the one that can walk the walk and talk the talk.

An effective leader follows the simple rule of praise in public, reprimand in private. To call out your troops in front of others in a negative manner leave to hostility, regret, and a general sense amongst all your troops that you do not respect them. Negative behaviors and action should always be dealt with in the confines of a private discussion. Contrarily positive behaviors and actions should be noted and praised in front of all your troops to promote a sense of success of the individual and provide hope and aspiration for all. Failure to recognize the difference among these two fundamental leadership traits can be disastrous to the morale of the army.

Equitable treatment amongst your troops is also a critical component of leadership. An effective leader must be able to recognize the difference between fair and equal . Fair treatment does not always come to equal treatment as the abilities and needs of the individuals can vary dramatically. You cannot expect your lower talented troops to perform at the same level as your higher troops however you can recognize them equally and still be fair. That is to say you can recognize one for not giving defensive losses with the same enthusiasm and regard as a another sweeping the enemy.

Finally discipline is certainly a key component. Discipline does not always have to be seen in a negative connotation. On the contrary discipline is an essential component of any organization. It can be as simple as setting firm expectations to execution of dramatic disciplinary measures for non compliance with General Orders. As a leader you must use your troops with an even but tempered hand. Overly harsh leaders will find rebellion and lack of performance within their ranks. Overly complacent leaders will find less than desired results. Therefore an effective leader knows the thin line to walk between both to get desired results.

In conclusion understanding the traits of the successful leaders it is imperative a clan constantly assess and understands your leaders. It is also necessary to train and supervise those that you stick in leadership roles. While there are certainly some that may be considered natural born leaders this is certainly the very rare. Therefore it is always recommended you put your leaders in training with successful current leaders so that they can learn the essential abilities needed to lead.

The Lore of the Land by David McCallum #701548

I admit it, I'm a sucker for the background material that goes with games.

It's possibly because In my younger days I was an avid reader, but I can certainly recall picking up a set of war game rules and reading through the "fluff text" before bothering with the actual rules mechanics.

From memory (and showing my age here..) I think the best example was a supplement to the Games Workshop game Space Hulk called "Deathwing". It involved a tale of genetically modified soldiers that had been drawn from the descendants of native American Indians. In a desperate mission with no chance of reinforcements, they call upon the power of their ancestors and ancient tribal beliefs to aid them.

Its a crying shame that this evocative tale has been all but buried and ignored in later releases of the game, even though the Deathwing unit still remains as some of their most elite troops.

What has this got to do with Mecha Galaxy?

Well, unless you are blind, you must by now have noticed that a lot of work is going into revamping the narrative around the game. A complete redo of Cogwerk port with a vastly expanded narrative and some new colourful characters. Older mechs are having their stats revamped along with a redo of technical and origin descriptions. Not to mention the raid narratives we have had leading from Drocha to Xerxes and Bismarck.

So it leads me to some questions for you, our dear readers...

Firstly, are you in it for the game only, and unlike me don't actually give two hoots about the narrative?

If you do like the fluff parts of games and the associated in-game lore, what is your opinion of the improvements being made?

And finally do you prefer it if existing lore is adhered to, or would you be fine with retcons of specific items? If so, to what extent?

I'm interested in your thoughts, so remember to pop your comments below along with your player ID number and your views will earn you some niodes.

Firepower Challenge

Mecha Now Online By Cher Mechagalaxy Lee#875837

Now that we are able to use our technology into creating a Fire Stone 2.0 it can be sold at a good rate in order to keep the trade going. Fire Stone 2.0 how ever is not as high tech as Fire Stone 1.0 because we are not able to find some of it's rare parts like the weapon that it uses on it's shoulder.

We do not have any technology that could auto aim at any fast moving living or dead object in a mind of it's own.

Instead we replace it with a feature that allows you to see at a 360 degree and able to fire in any direction with you having 3 screens. The Fire Stone is what we would call a new Era.
